Weekly Winners 2020 - 52

Christmas isn't going to stop us from posting our Weekly Winners this year! This week we see some price changes because of Kaldheim's spoilers, and a spike of a somewhat unexpected card. To stay within the Christmas spirit, we will also show you the price graphs of some Wizards Holiday cards.

Like every week, just in time for (digital) Christmas, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of your family's Zoom gathering tonight!

#1 Lovisa Coldeyes $11.86 (+427%)

Lovisa Coldeyes

When writing these articles there are always certain things I try to avoid, and one of them is discussing a card that has been discussed recently in this series before. But Lovisa Coldeyes barely left me any choice. Our last week's #3 winner is now our #1, going up with over 600%. In the past two weeks Lovisa went from being a $1.25 card to being $12.

The reason obviously is no different than last week: Berserkers are a thing in Kaldheim, and mainly Magda, Brazen Outlaw is to blame. She seems to be a popular EDH commander to be, and Lovisa Coldeyes is an amazing addition to these tribal decks. So if you want to read a bit more about this spike, you can check Weekly Winners - 51 from last week. I will make up for the "easy include" in this article later on with some Christmas cards!

#2 Nut Collector $38.04 (+254%)

Nut Collector

So... I heard you like nuts! Squirrels are always popular in EDH, and it just so happens that Kaldheim gives us our very first squirrel commander: Toski, Bearer of Secrets. Toski is absolutely nuts! It is kind of odd though that Nut Collector spiked a day before Toski was officially spoiled, but Magic has never been short the past few years in early leaks.

But Mark Rosewater has spoiled already in his teasers that Kaldheim would include a Legendary squirrel, so the one thing we didn't know for sure yet were the colors for example. However, that a Legendary squirrel would at least be in the color green shouldn't be a big surprise.

Because of Toski, Bearer of Secrets we obviously also saw an increase in price in Deranged Hermit ($48.99, +73%). Being on the reserved list already carries a premium, and it being a squirrel lord makes it a pretty easy target.

#3 Jester's Mask $10.45 (+18%)

Jester's Mask

Well, there is a spike I did not expect. This spike has a lot of signs of being a targeted buyout: average spiked up tremendously, but the market price only moved up a few dollars. Meaning the card is listed for a higher price than people are willing to pay for it. Jester's Mask is also on the infamous reserved list, meaning no new copies will enter the supply ever.

Now, in all fairness, even tough I don't believe this card can sustain this price, there is a little bit of merit to it. Some people believe Archelos, Lagoon Mystic is part of the reason for the spike. I mean, in casual games when Jester's Mask comes into play untapped, it is pretty funny to spend to wreck your opponent's hand and just stack it with nonsense, for example all lands. Or you can give your opponent exactly what they need to counter what a third player is doing in some good old EDH diplomacy shenanigans. That being said: this isn't enough to warrant this price.

I came across this video from Rudy, from Alpha Investments, who also has something to say about this spike. Hi, Rudy! I'm with you on this one!

Spirit, I fear you more than any specter I have yet met.

So not really weekly winners, but perhaps interesting to see during this holiday season. Just like every year Wizards has given out (or rather sent out this year) their annual Holiday card. Let's take a look at which ones there are, and their prices. So be a bit wary of these prices. We see that the more expensive ones have been bought out recently or were delisted. If we look at Thopter Pie Network we see an average price of $723, but the market price still dangles around $20, and we see this for more of these Special Occasion cards.

There's a lot going on around Modern, and each of our winners at least mention the format. But there are two winners that seem to be directly linked to it.
