Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Scion of Draco $13.00 (+197%)

Here's a wild card, and from Modern Horizons 2. I mean, who doesn't want to pay 12 mana for a flying 4/4 creature? It even buffs all your other creatures! What else are you going to do for 12 mana anyway? In December 2021 Scion of Draco already showed up in the Weekly Winners when it was included in Calibrated Blast decks. In those decks it obviously wasn't included to be played out on the battlefield, but to be hit with the Blast and deal 12 damage to your opponent. If you're interested, you can see a recent deck list of this deck here

But Scion of Draco has more text than I just glanced over. A very important part of this artifact is the fact that it has Domain, making it cheaper for each basic land type you have on the battlefield. Meaning that if you have five types on the battlefield, it will only cost . Back in September 2022 it also showed up in the Weekly Winners when five color decks become extra popular in Commander because of cards like Jodah, the Unifier and Jared Carthalion. Also since the printing of the Triomes cycles where a single land has three basic land types, it became pretty easy to max out on the basic land types.

But this week we see Scion of Draco shooting up because of a new card printed in Karlov Manor. Leyline of the Guildpact has been hailed as both amazing and downright bad by player, and time will tell what it will end up being. But nevertheless, it's an interesting card. As you can expect from a Leyline, you are allowed to put it on the battlefield if it's in your opening hand. It makes all your nonland permanents every color, and your lands every basic land type. Do you see where this is going with Scion of Draco? It means that if you have Leyline of the Guildpact in your opening hand you can cast Scion of Draco for . And not only that, since your creatures are now every color they will receive every buff that Draco has to offer.

Interestingly enough, this interaction has been picked up in Modern Crashing Footfalls decks (among others). Both Draco and the Leyline cannot be hit by a Cascade spell in the deck, the Leyline also enables Leyline Binding and can also be pitched to Force of Negation if drawn later in the game. Because of these reasons we also see Leyline of the Guildpact move up in price the past week.

#2 Cryptic Coat $6.26 (+492%)

Usually I try to stay away a bit from cards that have not released yet, or have been really recently released, because preselling prices don't often reflect the price a card should be having. But usually we see that these prices are too high and they come down pretty quickly. In the case of Cryptic Coat it seems like this Equipment was severely undervalued.

While it turns out, and makes sense, that this card would probably be good in Limited, these formats don't drive prices. You cannot buy cards in advance for it. But it turns out this card is also pretty good in constructed formats. For you get to play it and immediately attach it to a 2/2 creature that you cloaked from the top of your library, after which is becomes a 3/2. That's not too bad, but when the creature gets dealt with you get to return the coat to your hand for just two mana to be played again, and again, and again.

We see it appear in a bunch of Standard decks, but also being tinkered with in Modern, and Pioneer.

#3 Hollowhenge Overlord $16.40 (+125%)

This rare from Commander: Innistrad: Crimson Vow has been moving up quickly the past week. Especially the extended art print has been doing pretty well. Hollowhenge Overlord is a must-include in any commander deck that revolves around wolves. Both the art and the ability is brings support this type. It costs a whopping six mana, but when you pay that, you get to flash in this 4/4 Wolf. At the beginning of your upkeep you get to make a 2/2 Wolf for each Wolf or Werewolf you control. Especially when you flash this is on a board with several Wolves already, that spirals out of control pretty quickly. And people were already aware, because it wasn't exactly a bulk rare to begin with. A month ago it was selling for $3. Wouldn't say that's expensive perse, but definitely more than bulk status.

Voja, Jaws of the Conclave

The card was already found often in Commander decks around Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves, Tovolar, Dire Overlord, and Varis, Silverymoon Ranger, but it has found a new commander it desperately wants to be played with. Voja, Jaws of the Conclave was printed in Karlov Manor, and is an amazing new Wolf commander.

Voja has been pushing more cards to go up the past week. One of these is Wolverine Riders which we also have seen showing up in our Interests the past week, along with the Innistrad: Double Feature version of Cemetery Prowler. If you are interested in Voja decks, definitely give Adam's article a read: Hidden Gems for Voja, Jaws of the Conclave.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
