Weekly Winners 2020 - 04

The new standard is slowly taking shape, and people are figuring out more and more ways to play with cool new Theros: Beyond Death interactions. But we also see a spike because of my favorite format: Legacy! Sit back, prepare for FNM, and get read up on what cards will be the talk of the town tonight!

#1 Sacred Guide $3.97 (+802%)

Sacred Guide

Well, I certainly did not expect to see this card on the top of the Interests this week. Sacred Guide is a rare from Tempest with a unique ability. You can sacrifice it for , and then exile cards from the top of your library until you find a white card. Put that white card into your hand.

The reason for this spike seems to be Thassa's Oracle, which is a new way to immediately win the game if played with an empty library. Sacred Guide already saw play in certain cEDH Hulk decks where it is the only white card, meaning that for you can mill your entire deck. Now Thassa's Oracle will win you the game when immediately played after.

Seems like the spike for this card is mostly driven through EDH, since it opens up some new piles for Protean Hulk combo decks. One of these piles could be, for example, Thassa's Oracle, Sacred Guide, Cloud of Faeries, and Sylvan Safekeeper. As long as you can pay the Sacred Guide's activation cost, which should be the case since you'll untap two lands with the Cloud of Faeries trigger, that will win you the game on the spot!

#2 Dream Trawler $3.95 (+299%)

Dream Trawler

Well, what do you know? Turns out a 3/5 flying lifelinker, that attacks for 5, draws cards and can be given hexproof is good! The mana cost of may seem steep, but Azorius or Esper decks that can play Trawler usually aren't know for their quick win conditions. They rather trade resources, control the board, and force the match into the late game where they can get the upper hand and run the opponent out of cards. By that point, the 6 mana should be easily available. Discarding a card to protect Dream Trawler is a small price to pay, seeing as it draws cards when it attacks.

The card has also shown up in Pioneer and Modern lists, but mostly as sideboard tech.

#3 Retrofitter Foundry $16.54 (+176%)

Retrofitter Foundry

This card showed up in Legacy where, together with Ornithopter, it can put down a 4/4 on turn 1. The deck is a Ninja deck, where Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow and Ingenious Infiltrator are making their appearance for some card advantage. The best way to get ninjas into play is by Ninjutsu-ing them with an unblocked creature. This is where Ornithopter shines as well, since it has evasion.

We also see Changeling Outcast being called up to the majors providing the deck with an unblockable creature that can be ninjutsu-ed. But wait! Changeling Outcast is a shapeshifter, making it a thopter among others, and thus can be turned into a 4/4 as well by Retrofitter Foundry.

Also without creating 4/4s as soon as turn 1, Retrofitter Foundry can be used as mana sink to create 1/1 creature if necessary.
