Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Entangler $7.45 (+269%)

This uncommon Aura from Prophecy has spiked recently. Entangler lets an enchanted creature block any number of creatures, which sounds pretty underwhelming on its own. Blocking your opponent's entire board and only lose one single creature yourself may not sound that bad, but it also isn't particularly good or exciting. But when you pair it with the right commander, this effect becomes absolutely brutal.

The reason for the spike is Anti-Venom, Horrifying Healer from the recent Marvel's Spider-Man set. Anti-Venom turns all damage into +1/+1 counters instead, which means an enchanted Anti-Venom can block an entire attack without any downside and becoming stronger. The spike is amplified by Entangler's scarcity. It only has the one printing from Prophecy, which was back in 2000.

While Spider-Man hasn't caused nearly as many price movements as Final Fantasy or Lord of the Rings, Anti-Venom needs quite specific cards. For example, we also see the Secret Lair print of Pariah moving up this week. That said, once the initial hype dies down, Entangler will likely fall back down since it doesn't see much play outside this one commander.

#2 Arena of the Ancients $74.95 (+206%)

Let's talk about another old card, this time from Legends. Arena of the Ancients has been moving up recently. This artifact taps all legendary creatures when it enters and then prevents them from untapping. For three mana, that's an efficient lockdown effect in a format where almost every deck revolves around its commander. The card has been around since 1994, and got a Chronicles reprint that keeps it obtainable if you don't care about the set.

The spike comes from increased social media attention, particularly from Theteabeard's Instragram. With Universes Beyond sets pumping out legendary creatures, and Commander decks naturally running more legends than ever, Arena is suddenly looking better. And if you really want to make friends, you can even pair it with Leyline of Singularity to lock down all creatures.

Arena does affect your own legendary creatures though, including your commander, which means you need to either build around it or find ways to break the symmetry. Cards like Seedborn Muse or blinking effects can get around this, but that requires additional setup. Also not every player likes playing against a Stax-like strategy, but that's for you and your pod to figure out.

#3 Ensnared by the Mara $3.73 (+90%)

This red sorcery from Universes Beyond: Doctor Who has been moving up recently, and it's thanks to new commanders from the PlayStation Secret Lair Superdrop that was announced at MagicCon: Atlanta. Ensnared by the Mara uses the villainous choice mechanic, forcing each opponent to pick between two bad options: either exile cards until they hit a nonland card that you get to cast for free, or exile the top four cards and take damage equal to their total mana value.

While your opponents will always choose the lesser evil, both options provide solid value in a multiplayer game.

The spike happened right after the PlayStation Secret Lair preview, particularly because of Nathan Drake, Treasure Hunter. Nathan Drake makes stealing your opponents' cards even better since you can actually activate their abilities. The Uncharted drop also includes Passionate Archaeologist, and pairing these with cards like The Valeyard can double up on villainous choice triggers. Besides that, we also recently got Gwen Stacy where the Ghost-Spider side gets buffed when you cast things from exile.

Passionate Archaeologist

Doctor Who cards have limited supply, making theme easier to buy out and drive up the price. While the synergy with the new commanders is there, it's not exactly game-breaking. Ensnared by the Mara is a solid card in red decks that care about casting from exile, but the villainous choice mechanic means you can't guarantee the effect you want.

Over time, the price could creep up since reprints are tricky for Universes Beyond cards, but I wouldn't expect this to become a major staple.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Tidus, Yuna's Guardian $4.09 - Moving up!

Tidus, Yuna's Guardian has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.

Edward Kenway $5.67 - Moving down

Sami, Wildcat Captain $1.91 - Moving down
