Weekly Winners 2019 - 24

This has been a crazy week, with cards jumping to unexpected prices. It was also hard to select cards to discuss, because just like the past weeks a lot of spikes revolved around the same cards we've been discussing in previous articles as well. Turns out Narset, Parter of Veils and Urza, Lord High Artificer are still good, and are still making waves. So, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

#1 Reshape $160.10 (+3,277%)

Reshape

What? 160 dollars for a Darksteel rare? Don't worry, this is not the correct price and definitely will not stick. When we look at the listings on TCGplayer, we see there are barely any available, and that's exactly why the price is this outrageous. The card has been bought out, and will probably come back in stock in stores soon. The current market price lies around $6, which seems way more fair, but the price will eventually settle higher than this. On Ebay this card can be found for about $25-$30 each now.

There is however usually a reason for these targeted buyouts, and Reshape is no different. There are actually multiple reasons, so lets start with the easiest one. It's a popular card in EDH and CEDH Urza, Lord High Artificer decks. Finding an artifact in your deck is valuable and you can imagine you can find some powerful stuff to abuse Urza's abilities. But Urza has been spoiled for quite some time now, so if this was the real reason, we would have expected it to spike earlier.

More recently, Matt Nass has been playing a new deck at Channel Fireball around Bolas's Citadel which also plays 4 copies of Reshape. This deck uses the Citadel together with Aetherflux Reservoir to gain an absurd amount of life and kill the opponent with the Reservoir.

The deck is still in its beginning stages, but may be able to put up notable results in the future.

Reshape CardKingdom $8.99 TCGPlayer $160.10
Aetherflux Reservoir CardKingdom $7.99 TCGPlayer $7.06
Bolas's Citadel CardKingdom $1.49 TCGPlayer $2.29
Urza, Lord High Artificer CardKingdom $47.99 TCGPlayer $42.49

#2 Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis $19.98 (+568%)

Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis

This winner may be one that is no surprise to anyone who's even slightly interested in Modern. The Modern Dredge/Vengevine archetype has gotten two new toys in Modern Horizons in the form of Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis and Altar of Dementia. It has been putting up some good results and has gained a lot of popularity. I expect to see this deck a LOT at the Mythic Championship IV in Barcelona taking place in July.

We also see a lot of the others cards in this deck go up in price, like Bridge from Below, Altar Of Dementia, Gravecrawler, and Vengevine.

Altar Of Dementia CardKingdom $14.99 TCGPlayer $29.98
Gravecrawler CardKingdom $14.99 TCGPlayer $17.89
Vengevine CardKingdom $24.99 TCGPlayer $30.00
Bridge from Below CardKingdom $10.99 TCGPlayer $10.95
Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis CardKingdom $17.99 TCGPlayer $19.98
Altar of Dementia CardKingdom $5.99 TCGPlayer $5.40

#3 One with Nothing $55.07 (+659%)

One with Nothing

Nothing really to report. Kind of feels like a meme-buyout in my opinion, and the price will either come down, or nobody cares because nobody actually plays it. People speculated on it, hoping that it would be amazing Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis tech, but I doubt it will make the cut.

One with Nothing
Saviors of Kamigawa CardKingdom $5.49 TCGPlayer $55.07

Modern Horizons settling

Prices for Modern Horizons are starting to settle and the good cards are slowly being separated from the hyped cards. In this small piece we'll show a few cards from this set that are going up. Because I also feel a bit bad for having the #3 Weekly Winner of this week being One with Nothing, I figured we could discuss a few more cards that you may find interesting.

Ice-Fang Coatl $3 (+67%)
Ice-Fang Coatl

Our flying snake seems to see some play in Modern Vanifar decks. The price on the manabase is small: just use Snow-Covered basics rather than regular basics. The ability to surprise block with a "color shifted" Baleful Strix is too good not to try.

Prismatic Vista $24.22 (+35%)
Prismatic Vista

When we look at the MTGO Modern League from June 12th we see several decks that are playing the newest fetchland. It may be not as good as the regular fetchlands, but it still fixes color that you're immediately able to use.

Bears... again
River Bear

But none of these cards are in Modern Horizons? Correct, but as we discussed in Weekly Winners 21 and Weekly Winners 23, Bears are wildly popular due to the printing of Ayula, Queen Among Bears.

So why this time? We can blame The Command Zone with their Bear Force One deck, spiking hype again for this tribal.

Words of Wilding CardKingdom $1.99 TCGPlayer $4.99
Grizzly Fate CardKingdom $0.59 TCGPlayer $2.49
Pale Bears CardKingdom $1.29 TCGPlayer $4.99
River Bear CardKingdom $0.99 TCGPlayer $7.49
Ayula, Queen Among Bears CardKingdom $0.79 TCGPlayer $0.99

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Reanimate $9.64 - Record low and bottoming out
