Weekly Winners 2021 - 42

Again another quiet week finance wise. We do see some small fluctuations but not nearly as much as usual. We do however have some cards moving because of Standard, Modern and Commander meaning it is a diverse week. This could very well be the silence before the storm with the new Innistrad set coming soon.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

#1 Patron of the Vein $24.08 (+72%)

Patron of the Vein

Last week we discussed Bloodline Keeper moving up because of the upcoming Innistrad: Crimson Vow set where we can definitely expect to see vampires being printed. Did you listen to us last week when we told you to pick up the Vampires you want to play with? Perhaps you did, because the price of Patron of the Vein has been moving up in anticipation of the new set and probably a card that can be included in the new Crimson Vow Commander: Vampiric Bloodline deck.

But this week we also saw Cordial Vampire from Modern Horizons go up to $7 (+18%) which has a similar effect as Patron of the Vein when it comes to creatures dying. I expect to see more vampires go up as spoiler season starts at the 28th.

#2 Memory Deluge $7.50 (+58%)

Memory Deluge

Memory Deluge is a pretty niche card that nobody probably has even ever heard of! No... wait... it's one of the top 10 most played cards in Standard. For four mana you can look at the top 4 cards and take two of them. But it has flashback for 7 mana, meaning you can look at the top 7 cards of your library and keep two of them. It being an instant makes it perfect to just keep your mana open and react to whatever your opponent is doing. If you don't really need to react to your opponent you can use your mana to dig. Memory Deluge sees play in several Standard control builds like Izzet Dragons, Dimir Control, Bant ramp, Azorius Control.

But it has also picked up steam in Modern where we see it appear in, amongst others, Azorius Control and Grixis Control. In these Modern decks we see another new card as finisher from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms that we also see in a lot of Standard control decks: Hall of Storm Giants. This man-land is insanely powerful when the game goes long. You can just let it be a land, until you need a 7/7 to regularly smash face. While Memory Deluge is mostly popular in Standard and Modern, it only sees a little bit of commander play, but not too much.

#3 Call the Coppercoats $3.01 (+51%)

Call the Coppercoats

A card going from less than $2 to about $3 doesn't seem that much of a deal, but it does seem to be one of the largest spikes of the past week. On February 14th 2021 Dana Roach, writer for EDHRec and Commander's Herald, tweeted about this card stating "There might be no card I slept on more in 2020 than Call the Coppercoats. I've never once saw it cast where it didn't generate insane value wildly disproportionate to the mana spent." For , plus an additional for each opponent you want to target beyond the first, you can potentially generate a lot of 1/1 dorks at instant speed.

We see the card show up mostly in commander decks that revolve around humans or benefit from having a bunch of creatures. Popular commanders among them are Kyler, Sigardian Emissary, Katilda, Dawnhart Prime, Sigarda, Champion of Light, Jirina Kudro and Silvar, Devourer of the Free. The first three are new commanders, meaning that interest in Call the Coppercoats may be sparked because of them. It is also expected that Innistrad: Crimson Vow may come with some more support around humans.

Yesterday Dana Roach also tweeted about Hall of Heliod's Generosity being an auto-include in any white deck. Just saying might be worthwhile to look into if white ever becomes good!

#4 Wand of Orcus $7.92 (+43%)

Wand of Orcus

A fairly new card from the Commander: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set. It has been going up through the entire Zombie-hype from the past few weeks. Giving all your Zombies deathtouch is pretty nice when you have a hoard of smaller creatures. This way they are still able to take out these big fatties that your opponents may have. And not only that, if the creature equipped with Wand of Orcus does combat damage to a player, you get some new zombies!

The equipment is a good upgrade to the Undead Unleashed commander deck and sees play in commander decks around Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver, Gorex, the Tombshell, and Gisa, Glorious Resurrector.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
