Weekly Winners 2022 - 44

Bit of a slow week but we managed to find some cards to write about. We see a card because of Commander demand, one card because of Pioneer, and a card because of Modern. This week we also see the first prices really come in from the 30th Anniversary Edition edition, and while these prices still have to settle it is interesting to see how much people are asking for these cards.

30th Anniversary Edition update

Like I mentioned the first prices for 30th Anniversary Edition are coming in, and we get an idea of how much sellers are asking for these cards. I deliberately say "asking", because we only see average asking prices show up, but (almost) no market prices. The only card so far we see a market price for is Craw Wurm, a kind of iconic card, but not that iconic that has been sold for $9.99. But to be fair, the prices came in for the first time today, so it kind of makes sense that not many have sold yet. Interesting to see how it will settle the upcoming weeks.

What's interesting so far is that the only piece of Power 9 found so far is Mox Ruby. You can always refer to the 30th Anniversary Edition page to see all prices. Here is a little overview of the top 5 cards from this set and their current average price.

#1 Prince of Thralls $21.00 (+118%)

 

Here is a Mythic from Shards of Alara that has never been reprinted since. It shot up with 118% this week, but the initial spike was way higher since it has already considerably come down since. It briefly touched $37 dollars on average. What's important to notice here is that the market value is currently at its highest point ever at $8.78, which is still a lot lower than both of these average price points. This seems to indicate that the card is being listed for high numbers, but people are not willing to pay that for it thus far.

Lets continue by reading the card itself. Prince of Thralls costs . That is a pretty steep price for a creature, but you do get a 7/7 demon. But whenever a permanent an opponent controls is put into a graveyard, put that card onto the battlefield under your control unless that opponent pays 3 life. That is a pretty sick ability. Demons are pretty popular right by because of the support it has gotten from the Warhammer 40K set, and especially in the Ruinous Powers deck that we have been mentioning quite often the past few weeks.

This card actually seems to have the reverse ability from Athreos, God of Passage that has been more expensive than Prince of Thralls until this week. With Athreos you get to return creatures to your when they die unless an opponent pays 3 life. While I do like to make this comparison, I do realise there are more differences between these cards that make Athreos more playable and may thus dictate a different price point.

#2 Reckless Stormseeker $3.68 (+44%)

 

This rare is probably well known to people who played with it during standard. It saw play in Werewolf decks and Red decks. This rare from Innistrad: Midnight Hunt costs and gives you a 2/3 werewolf creature. But at the beginning of combat on your turn, target creature you control gets +1/+0 and gains haste until end of turn. So it can give itself haste, or give another creature haste. However, during nighttime, it will become a 3/4 werewolf and is able to give a creature you control +2/+0, haste, and trample instead.

For 3 mana this is a creature with sufficient upside to be played. It seems it is now been picking up a bit in Pioneer where it can be found in decks as a 4-off. What is interesting about this card though is that the price went up considerably for the regular print and the Innistrad: Double Feature print, but the Showcase print seems far less popular at $2.19. What also is interesting is that for the regular Midnight Hunt version the foil price seems to be below the average price. This leads me in having some doubts whether this card is actually worth the current price tag.

 

#3 Hallowed Moonlight $4.87 (+225%)

 

Usually when we write about cards for the Weekly Winners we look at cards that have changed in value in the past week. For this card I am going to extend this range a little bit to a week-and-a-half. This week it didn't make the cut to even show up in the Interests, but I do think it is an interesting card to discuss. This card used to be $0.50, went up to about $1.50 about a week-and-a-half ago and now costs $4.87 while it still seems to be going up.

This instant from Magic Origins makes sure that if a creature would enter the battlefield and it wasn't cast, it will be exiled. Plus you get to draw a card. This all for only . It is a sort of instant version of Containment Priest, but cannot be removed on the spot. Once this instant resolves, the effect stays until the end of the turn. Plus... you know... a card! Never underestimate how good a utility or hate card is when it can also replace itself.

The reason this card is going up is still because of the Yorion, Sky Nomad ban that happened a few weeks ago in Modern, which is shaking up the metagame. And while Indomitable Creativity already were popular in Modern, it seems that this deck is now taking a larger chunk of the metagame. When an archetype gets really popular within a format, people will need to be able to sideboard against those decks. We saw the same thing happening two weeks ago with Orvar, the All-Form as well! And it just so happens that Hallowed Moonlight is being used for the same reason as Orvar. It is to make sure that that pesky Archon of Cruelty does not get cheated onto the battlefield.
