Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Nest of Scarabs $7.20 (+592%)

This enchantment from Amonkhet jumped once the full Blight Curse deck list was revealed. Nest of Scarabs creates a 1/1 black Insect token for each -1/-1 counter you place on a creature, making it an obvious inclusion in any strategy built around those counters. The card works beautifully with Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons and other token-focused commanders, and it's one of the few strong -1/-1 counter payoffs that didn't get reprinted in the deck.

Over the past few weeks, collectors had been speculating on various -1/-1 counter cards in anticipation of Blight Curse and knowing that -1/-1 counters would be a theme in the new Lorwyn set. This was known pretty early on when High Perfect Morcant was previewed. Some bought into cards like The Scorpion God, Necroskitter, and Flourishing Defenses early, only to watch those cards get reprinted and go down in value once the deck list dropped. Nest of Scarabs flew under the radar during all this speculation, likely because many players assumed it would be an automatic include given how perfectly it synergizes with the blight mechanic.

Once the full list went public without Nest of Scarabs, players rushed to pick up copies. Some are upgrading their precons. Auntie Ool, Cursewretch, the deck's commander, specifically rewards you for putting counters on your own creatures rather than just opponents', which makes Nest of Scarabs good here since it doesn't care whose creatures are getting counters.

Whether this price sustains itself depends on how popular Blight Curse ends up being and whether Wizards reprints Nest of Scarabs in a future product. For now though, anyone who was waiting to see the deck list before buying missed the window for cheap copies.

#2 Flamekin Harbinger $3.30 (+119%)

Elemental tutors are, not really shockingly, more popular since the Lorwyn Eclipsed precons were revealed, and this one-drop from the original Lorwyn set is no exception. Flamekin Harbinger lets you search for any Elemental card and put it on top of your library when it enters, making it a staple in Elemental typal strategies. But with the reveal of the Dance of the Elements precon people seem to be flocking to get their copies.

Elementals were expected to be appearing in Lorwyn Eclipsed, but Ashling, the Limitless seems to be the main driver behind the current spike. Her printed text says "Elemental spells you cast from your hand have evoke ," but she's receiving errata to specify "Elemental permanent spells" instead. Being able to find these permanent Elements through Harbinger is powerful enough to make Flamekin Harbinger an obvious inclusion in Ashling builds. Obviously, since the precon revolves around Elementals and Harbinger itself was not reprinted, it's a good upgrade.

Multiple printings have all seen price movement. The Planechase version has climbed the most due to its lower print run, jumping from under a dollar to around three dollars now. The original Lorwyn printing has also moved up. The Secret Lair variant saw the largest jump in absolute terms, going from around four dollars to over twelve. Supply is thinning across all versions as players rush to upgrade their precons.

#3 Isu the Abominable $10.52 (+92%)

This Yeti from Jumpstart 2022 has seen some interesting demand over the past month, particularly around the holidays. Prices have climbed from around two dollars to about ten now, with a market price of over six. It's an odd spike for a fairly unknown card, but the timing sort-of makes sense given the seasonal appeal. Isu is one of the few commanders that cares specifically about snow lands and spells, making him a fitting choice for players looking to bring a festive theme to their Commander tables during the winter months.

Isu lets you look at the top card of your library and play snow lands or cast snow spells from there, which provides some card advantage in the right build. His final ability gives him a surprisingly decent color identity through the mana pips, allowing access to Bant (white, blue, and green) colors. Whenever another snow permanent enters, you can pay one mana to put a +1/+1 counter on him. Cards like Ohran Frostfang, Moritte of the Frost, Icebreaker Kraken, and Adarkar Valkyrie give you some solid options to work with, though the snow card pool is limited compared to other typal strategies.

The main factor, however, is scarcity. Jumpstart 2022 mythics only appeared in specific packet themes, creating very limited supply. This pattern applies across the entire set. Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm sells for over sixty dollars, while Lita, Mechanical Engineer holds around twelve dollars even after a bonus sheet reprint in the Avatar set. When demand increases even slightly for these cards, prices move quickly because there simply aren't many copies available.

Whether this price holds past the holiday season is uncertain. The spike is interesting from a financial perspective given how little play Isu sees overall, but seasonal demand isn't always sustainable. Unless Wizards prints more snow support or the holidays roll around again, demand will likely go down. Still, the combination of limited supply and niche appeal means Isu could hold a higher baseline than before, even if he settles back down.
