Weekly Winners 2022 - 40

This week we see stuff moving because of commander, as usual, and also a little bit of Modern. It is always spoiler season nowadays, so this week we have some spoilers from The Brothers' War slowly coming in. But because of the Magic 30th anniversary a lot of news is coming out about upcoming products. Who wants to buy 4 boosters for only $999 with a chance of opening crap rares? Anyway, I hope you like this week's article.

Just got back home from holiday about an hour ago, and I have been awake for about 22 hours now. Couldn't sleep on the plane unfortunately. As is best, I am trying to immediately get into the rhythm I should be in so am trying to finish my day and go to bed at the time I usually do so. However, that means I have to try to stay awake for at least 8 more hours, which is going to be a challenge. So, a bit sleep-deprived, but still wanted to give you your weekly article! Bear with me and please forgive typos.

Like every week, but unfortunately not in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

#1 Gonti's Aether Heart $7.05 (+553%)

Gonti's Aether Heart

I was actually not fully aware about the existence of this card since it seems to be a bulk Mythic that didn't really catch my attention when it came out. During release it costed about $2 and it didn't take too long for it to become worth less than $1. Gonti's Aether Heart is a mana costing Legendary Artifact that creates two energy counters when it, or another artifact, enters the battlefield under your control. For 8 energy counters you get to take an extra turn after this one, but you do have to exile Gonti's Aether Heart as part of the activation cost.

It has recently picked up a little bit of commander play in decks around a new commander from the Warhammer set, Imotekh the Stormlord, and in decks around The Peregrine Dynamo. There definitely is somewhat of a synergy there. However, this was not the reason for the card to spike. Nowadays it is always spoiler season for new cards, and the first cards for the next set, The Brothers' War, are already going up.

One of the cards spoiled is Mishra, Eminent One that will be printed in the commander set. It has at the beginning of combat on your turn, create a token that’s a copy of target noncreature artifact you control, except its name is Mishra’s Warform and it’s a 4/4 Construct artifact creature in addition to its other types. It gains haste until end of turn. Sacrifice it at the beginning of the next end step. So when you have both Mishra and Gonti's Aether Heart in play you can move to combat and create a copy of Gonti's Aether Heart with Mishra's ability. When that token enters the battlefield, both the token and the original will trigger netting you 4 energy tokens. Now you only need to play one single artifact to generate another 4 energy. Now that you have 8, you can exile the token for an extra turn. Rinse and repeat. As long as you can let a single artifact enter the battlefield you can keep getting extra turns. Keep in mind that Mishra's ability changes the name of the copy, meaning both the original Gonti's Aether Heart and the copy can co-exist because the Legendary rule looks at the card name.

#2 Spirit of Resistance $15.49 (+106%)

Spirit of Resistance

This is a somewhat older card from Invasion that has not been reprinted as of yet. It is an Enchantment for that reads as long as you control a permanent of each color, prevent all damage that would be dealt to you.

Now... Can we think of a commander that has been pretty popular lately that supports all colors? Of course there is! Jodah, the Unifier is here again to make sure another card spikes. It almost seems like it is making waves every single week when a new card gets bought out that cares about as many colors as possible. We also see this card appear in commander decks around Jared Carthalion or Jenson Carthalion, Druid Exile.

It seems kind of good to be able to prevent all damage being dealt to you for only 3 mana, making it a logical include in these kind of decks I guess.

#3 Ardent Plea $9.72 (+97%)

Ardent Plea

This card is not a new comer to Modern, since it has been part of Crashing Footfalls decks for quite some time already. These decks however have been performing better than they used to nowadays in Modern. It seems that cards like Leyline Binding have been pushing this deck into a higher tier.

So when we look at the text in Ardent Plea, we see that it is an enchantment for . And to be honest, the only important part is the Cascade ability. The decks plays more spells with Cascade, but they all have mana value 3. When you cast any of these, the Cascade will always find Crashing Footfalls since it is the only spell in the deck with mana value less than 3. This gives you two 4/4 green Rhino creatures with trample that can hopefully end the game.

Ardent Plea is quite special though. It is an uncommon from Alara Reborn that has never been reprinted. The supply seems rather low, while the demand may be high. The other cascade spells in the deck are Shardless Agent, that has been reprinted multiple times, and Violent Outburst that has also never been reprinted, but is a common. That being said, Violent Outburst also is a $5 card.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
