Weekly Winners 2020 - 06

Somewhat of a slow week, but just like every week we managed to discuss some of the most interesting cards that have moved in price. A little bit more concise than usual, but I hope not less welcome. Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

#1 Plague of Vermin $8.00 (+608%)

Plague of Vermin

I did not expect to see Plague of Vermin on the interests lists. Rats have been a popular tribal for quite some time, and the release of the Secret Lair rats have added to that hype. Some would say it's not a very strong tribal, compared to others, but to be fair, I have a casual rats deck for about 6 years now.

You could say that Plague of Vermin is a win-combo together with Ayara, First of Locthwain. Let's say you and your opponent are both at 20 life, you play Ayara, she deals 1 damage to your opponent (19) and you gain 1 life (21). Now you play Plague of Vermin and you pay 19 life, your opponent can't pay that amount so you put 19 rats into play, and Ayara deals 19 damage to your opponent. Is it a good combo? Not really. Does it work? Yeah, probably sometimes.

I definitely see the price coming down again. This spike feels a lot like a buyout.

Plague of Vermin CardKingdom $2.49 TCGPlayer $8.00
Ayara, First of Locthwain CardKingdom $3.99 TCGPlayer $3.47

#2 Doomsday $7.20 (+127%)

Doomsday

This card used to be played in a Legacy deck named after the card. With Doomsday you could search 5 cards and make those your deck. These five cards (or Doomsday piles) were chosen in such a fashion that you could kill your opponent preferably on the spot, or the turn after (pass-the-turn pile). These decks are quite hard to pilot, and because of that, the people who were adept in played with it had a high win percentage, because many opponents simply did not know what to counter or what to side board against it. However, when Sensei's Divining Top and Gitaxian Probe got banned, the deck could not function on the same level it used to anymore. If you're interested in this deck, make sure you visit The Doomsday Codex.

But Doomsday still is a very interesting card, also in EDH. You can see that together with Jace, Wielder of Mysteries and the newly printed Thassa's Oracle you can clear your library quickly and get the win through alternative means. You can also make similar piles like done in the Legacy decks.

Even though the Classic Sixth Edition of this card went up, the Weatherlight can still be had for under $5 but also seems to be on the rise. There's clearly an upward trend on all prints.

Doomsday CardKingdom $5.99 TCGPlayer $4.64
Doomsday CardKingdom $5.49 TCGPlayer $7.20
Doomsday CardKingdom $7.49 TCGPlayer $6.05
Jace, Wielder of Mysteries CardKingdom $7.99 TCGPlayer $6.99
Thassa's Oracle CardKingdom $6.99 TCGPlayer $5.50

#3 Jace, Wielder of Mysteries + Thassa's Oracle (+40%)

Jace, Wielder of Mysteries

Discussing Jace, Wielder of Mysteries ($6.99) and Thassa's Oracle&nbsp($5.50) together because they are linked. They both try to win the game with an empty library. As we have seen with our previous winner Doomsday, these cards make sure that this is a viable win condition.

Another important reason for these two to go up is the Inverter of Truth Pioneer decks we see popup more and more. Alternative winconditions will always attract people to try to make it work. Maybe those decks are not always the most successful, but can certainly be a lot of fun to try to utilise.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
