Weekly Winners 2022 - 28

This week could have been pretty slow, but fortunately The Command Zone decided to release another video identifying "Obscure & Underrated cards", meaning random cards are spiking. Two of our winners were hit by this effect. Our third winner is a bit of a "catch all" since we see several Mythics from Double Masters 2022 going up the past week. That's definitely something to keep your eye on!

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

#1 Argivian Find $12.58 (+335%)

Argivian Find

Interesting card to spike. Argivian Find is an uncommon from Weatherlight and does not have a single reprint. Being able to only spend at instant speed to return an artifact or enchantment from your graveyard to your hand is not bad. Especially in commander when during the late game there's a good chance there are some toys in your graveyard that would be good to get back.

According to EDHRec it already sees some decent commander play, mainly in mono white and boros decks. The most notable being decks around Cho-Manno, Revolutionary that use Pariah style cards to try to make sure that you are not taking any damage. Being able to recur these auras is a good strategy for such a low mana-investment.

And even though the above may explain why Argivian Find is a decent card, it does not explain why it spikes this much right now. Everything I mentioned above has been this way for quite some time and well known. Well, it looks like The Command Zone is at it again. Three days ago they released a video called The Most Obscure & Underrated Cards where they discuss Argivian Find around the 23 minute mark.

#2 Tower of the Magistrate $50.50 (+242%)

Tower of the Magistrate

Ok, Tower of the Magistrate is a $50 card now. It is a rare from Mercadian Masques and that means it is 23 years old already and has never ever seen a reprint. It is not on the reserved list, so it could be reprinted at some point, but until then the supply is scarce. And since it has never been reprinted before, people were hoping it would be included in Double Masters 2022. However, was not the case and the Mercadian Masques remains the only print for now. It also sees play in Legacy Depths builds, but mostly as a one-off in the sideboard.

I think one of the funnest interactions you can do with Tower of the Magistrate is dropping swords off of your opponent's creatures by giving them protection from artifacts. This obviously works for most, if not all, equipments and can occasionally be an unexpected effect when someone isn't aware of this.

The card spiked from $15, but even was as low as $5 back in January. And this card spiking was only a matter of time in my opinion, as long as it wouldn't be reprinted. However! There is a big catch here! Just like the previous winner this card was mentioned in the Command Zone video as the very first "Most Obscure & Underrated card" and that most likely sent the price of the card up!

#3 Dockside Extortionist $58.99 (+18%)

Dockside Extortionist

We all already know that and why Dockside Extortionist is a good card in commander. Your opponents generally have some mana rocks and other artifacts or enchantments, and for only 2 mana you can generate a bunch of Treasure Tokens. When we look at the Commander 2019 print of Dockside Extortionist we see that it dropped from its all time high of $75 to about $54, meaning over a 25% drop. But now it is picking up in price again.

But when I say Dockside Extortionist, I actually kind of mean several other mythic rares that are reprinted in Double Masters 2022. In the interests we find multiple mythics that have dropped but are going up again. Food Chain was about $30 and is now up by 40% to $42. Do keep in mind that the price of these reprints still is lower than what the cards used to be, and especially the Double Masters 2022 versions are cheaper than their earlier prints. Lets briefly look at the other ones:

Food Chain $42.13 (+40%)

Mana Drain $45.25 (+28%)

Allosaurus Shepherd $37.00 (+19%)

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Hellkite Charger $4.69 - Moving up!

Hellkite Charger has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has bottomed for a bit but is now starting an uptrend.
