Weekly Winners 2022 - 18

This week we see a lot of spikes happening for cards from, or because of cards from, Streets Of New Capenna or Commander: Streets of New Capenna. The set is hitting the market and people are brewing! New strategies are evolving and content creators are showing interactions that peak people's interest. Keep in mind that when a set is brand new, the supply still is rolling and new copies will enter the market daily. Don't get sucked in!

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

#1 Ledger Shredder $9.05 (+905%)

Ledger Shredder

Our first card from Streets Of New Capenna spike! Let's go! This card has disappeared from TCGplayer and also Card Kingdom and Star City Games barely have them in stock. When people flock to buy a card the price quickly goes up, up, up! Lets look at the card for a bit. For you'll get a 1/3 flying creature that says whenever a player casts their second spell each turn, Ledger Shredder connives. So connives is one of the new keywords from New Capenna that says: draw a card, then discard a card. If you discarded a nonland card, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.

Now if we read this carefully, it says whenever any player, not just you, plays their second spell each turn. This creature can get big really fast in the right deck and especially in commander games with multiple opponents. And on top of that you get to loot a card!

But there's more going on here. The card is being tinkered with in Pioneer. But aspiringspike also played four copies of Ledger Shredder in his Modern Ledger Shredder Shadow deck on Twitch. This definitely also put a lot of eyes on the card. It even went 5-0 in an MTGO Legacy League where Ledger Shredder was included in a mono deck as a 4-off.

For only 2 mana there is a lot to unpack in this creature and its definitely an interesting card. However, I do think that since New Capenna has just been released the supply is only just beginning. People will realise they own copies of this card and start listing driving the price down again. That being said, the card will probably remain popular for the foreseeable future.

#2 Boldwyr Heavyweights $7.99 (+505%)

Boldwyr Heavyweights

I'd never thought I would say this about this card, but we actually mentioned it three weeks back in our Weekly Winners 2022-15 already. So before we get into exactly why this card topped our Interests list last week, lets notice that it is a rare from Morningtide. This is important to recognise, because when Morningtide came out in February 2008 the world was in the early stages of "the great recession". This recession also affected Magic, meaning fewer packs were opened than the sets before, and even the sets after leading to relatively little cards in circulation from this set. This leads to rares that are popular tend to be more volatile in value.

So a few weeks back we were discussing the spike of Hellcarver Demon because of a leak from Commander: Streets of New Capenna where we first saw The Beamtown Bullies. In the article we discussed how you can force your opponents to reanimate creatures with negative side effects, and thus talking about Hellcarver Demon's abilities. But in that same line of reasoning we also saw Boldwyr Heavyweights. How funny would it be if you could let your opponent put Boldwyr Heavyweights into play, so that you (and your opponents, but still) can find a creature from your deck and put into play?

Not only would that be super funny, but that's exactly what happened in the last episode of Game Knight from The Command Zone (around the 30m mark) which are known for being able to spike cards when they appear on their channel.

While we're discussing the The Beamtown Bullies related spikes, lets also acknowledge Ebonblade Reaper that came in on our Interests list now trending around $5.99 by going up with 240%. Remember that creatures reanimated with The Beamtown Bullies are also goaded, meaning they cannot attack you!

#3 Grand Crescendo $19.74 (+300%)

Grand Crescendo

Another card from New Capenna! Except, not exactly, it is from the Commander: Streets of New Capenna set! Close enough! I hope you weren't looking for a more sophisticated reason for this spike besides "because the card is goooood!" For only you can dodge a wrath effect that may come your way, and if you can spare a little extra mana, then you can even get some extra creatures. This card is going to be, or already is, a popular commander staple

#4 Plea for Power $8.60 (+165%)

Plea for Power

You know what? That last winner was rather short and you probably could have come up with that yourself anyway. Let's do another winner! Cards with voting have gotten some new love in New Capenna. We have gotten some new toys to play with in Tivit, Seller of Secrets. New combine a strategy that has found a new commander along with a card that could (potentially in this case) get you another turn, and you've got yourself a card that spikes!

Plea for Power is a rare that was printed in Conspiracy, and I was shocked to realise that this set was released 8 years ago already! It came out in June 2014. This sorcery has the Will of the Council ability, meaning voting! Each player gets to vote for time or knowledge. If time gets the most votes, you take an extra turn. Otherwise you draw three cards. Not bad! Especially when you get to vote twice, or even more times when combined with Brago's Representative or Ballot Broker.

Unless you get to vote a bunch of times you are very likely for this card to be a draw three. So something could be said that this card may also be played in a new commander from Streets Of New Capenna: Queza, Augur of Agonies. But this is purely a bit of speculation and definitely not the driving factor behind these prices.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset $4.99 - Moving up!
