Weekly Winners 2021 - 23

Modern Horizons 2 hasn't officially released yet, but is available on Magic Online, where the brewing has definitely started. This week we see the effects of that and some undervalued cards are seeing play. Interesting week where we see price movements based on Modern play.

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

#1 Feasting Troll King $3.98 (+712%)

Feasting Troll King

As if Throne of Eldraine didn't already contained a bunch of staples in several formats, we can (for now) add another one to the list. Feasting Troll King spiked this week because of Modern Horizons 2. I mean... what else?! The regular printing spiked with over 700% to $4, and the The Extended Art version spiked a lot more, to $20 (+1233%).

The reason is that it is played in Modern along with The Underworld Cookbook and Witch's Oven in Modern The Rock decks. The deck consists out of several little combos and interactions. First we obviously have Cauldron Familiar and Witch's Oven for draining. When we cycle a Street Wraith we can cast Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar for only 1 mana, finding the The Underworld Cookbook for more discard and generation of Food. Once we find an Ovalchase Daredevil and a second Cookbook we can generate two Food each turn, basically killing a creature every turn for free with Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar. With Urza's Saga you can always try the Construct beatdown plan as you cast more artifacts. Of course when we generate sufficient food, we can get a Feasting Troll King from the graveyard.

There are a lot of small intrinsic interactions that I also am not 100% aware of yet, but it seems the deck has some legs and is definitely worth exploring.

In the same category we also see Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar making a jump in price. Usually pre-sale prices are inflated for newly released cards, but sometimes they are undervalued. This unique unpronounceable creature may be one of these, since it doubled in price since last week. Not only does it see play in the decks mentioned above, it also shows up in Modern Hollow One decks.

#2 Prismatic Ending $4.74 (+356%)

Prismatic Ending

This seems to be another card that was slightly undervalued based on pre-sale prices. It quickly found a home in both Modern and Legacy. Especially in these eternal formats, where permanents often have a relative low mana cost, it is a really interesting way to get rid of them. Since it has no restrictions on the type of permanent, except non-land obviously, it is an easy catch all for decks playing at least two colors.

That's exactly what we see in Modern and Legacy, where it is included in Azorius () control or Miracle control decks. Since these decks tend to want to get to the mid-game or late-game where they can more easily out-value other decks, Prismatic Ending is perfect to get rid of those pesky early plays your opponent may have.

#3 Vengevine $32.80 (+120%)

Vengevine

It's a good week for graveyard based decks in Modern-land! Vengevine definitely isn't new to Modern, but with the new cards in Modern Horizons 2 and the new toys for graveyard-based decks, it may see an uptick in play. Most of these cards were already mentioned in our #1 winner this week.

But we mostly see Vengevine played along with Hollow One and Goblin Lore. This last one also showed up in this week's interests, with a price increase of 235% to $5. Different versions of this card can be had for less though.

Vengevine CardKingdom $18.99 TCGPlayer $32.80
Hollow One CardKingdom $1.49 TCGPlayer $1.12
Vengevine CardKingdom $18.99 TCGPlayer $27.99
Goblin Lore CardKingdom $2.49 TCGPlayer $4.99
Vengevine CardKingdom $18.99 TCGPlayer $23.00

#4 Merieke Ri Berit $2.65 (+ 32.50%)

Merieke Ri Berit

Post Malone special! I think most of us are aware that Post Malone played a game of commander on Game Knights at The Command Zone. He played a deck with Merieke Ri Berit as commander and won! I was interested to see whether this had an impact on the price of her, and in fact it has!

Her price went up with over 30% to... $2.65... Anyway, I definitely think she's a fun a commander to build around. See the decklist below.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
