Special update: Pioneer - Top 100 and Top 5 winners

22 Oct
by Peter

Yesterday, surprising many, a new format was announced: Pioneer. A non-rotating format featuring all cards from Return to Ravnica and later. A new opportunity for players, brewers and speculators.

In this Flash Price Update we give you two Top X lists. First the top 100 most expensive cards in Pioneer. And after that the Top 5 of biggest winners since the announcement yesterday. Just one little tip if you feel the FOMO: ths new format is going to be surprising in many ways. Some cards will go up in price instantly, but if you want to stay ahead of the curve and get a good deal on cards, stay on top of content creators, new brews and interesting strategies.

Pioneer legality & lists update

Before I discuss the two top lists, first a small announcement about our lists. You might have seen our handy lists in the analytics menu. As of this article, the lists are now filterable on card price, set, rarity and name. With that, it has become much easier to keep track. In addition, the lists will also show the market price of cards.

You'll also notice that as of today we show Pioneer card legality with each card. So you will notice that sadly, Emrakul, the Aeons Torn is not Pioneer legal.

The Pioneer Top 100 most expensive

That brings me to our Top 100 most pricey cards legal in Pioneer. This list is updated every day, just like all other lists on the site. This list contains all the cheapest prints from all cards legal in Pioneer, and shows the current value.

At first glance you will notice that all the top most expensive cards see play in other formats, ranging from Standard to Vintage. But on this first day of Pioneer, our top 100 list gives you a first glance of the top pieces to choose from to brew a deck around. Cards that are already considered good in another format will be the first to attract the brewers' attention.

Currently, the list is dominated by those cards, but we do expect a lot of changes. Cards that see fringe or lower tiered play in Modern and Legacy might get a chance. Others are banned in certain formats and are already on the top 100 list. But some aren't (yet), like Dig Through Time.

To put things in perspective, I have also included the top 5 winners of the day, giving more insight in what people are buying in anticipation of a new Magic format.

Daily winners: Top 5

Surprising no one, prices on key cards spiked right after Pioneer was announced. Some spiked before that actually, since the announcement was leaked and some individuals were tempted to act on that. But today we see movement all across our interests page, with this top 5.

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.
