Weekly Winners 2019 - 36

This week does not have huge spikes, but rather many smaller and relevant ones. There is much abrew in EDH and Modern and it is affecting many card prices this week. Just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

#1 Worldgorger Dragon $8.21 (+235%)

Worldgorger Dragon

It was time that Worldgorger Dragon got the love it deserves! It is one of those cards that has a unique ability with which you can build incredible combos that (help) win you the game.

One classic Worldgorger Dragon combo is the one with Animate Dead. When you target Worldgorger Dragon with it, as it enters the battlefield, all permanents are exiled. Including Animate Dead. The result: you have to sacrifice your Dragon. When you do so, all permanents are returned to play, including Animate Dead.

You can keep repeating this as many times as you like. When cards are exiled and come back, they come back untapped. So every time you can tap and untap your lands, creatures and other permanents.

But creatures get summoning sickness as well. So you won't be able to keep tapping and untapping those creatures for their abilities.

Unless they have haste. Like Anje Falkenrath form Commander 2019 has. With that commander and a bunch of cards with madness you can get one hell of a combo machine running as fast as turn 2 (if everything pans out like you want it to), but most of the time in your third, fourth or fifth turns.

Brews with Anje Falkenrath is the reason Worldgorger Dragon spiked. But at this time it is not clear how competitive the deck will be. Could it get into the top tiers? It has potential but could it end up at the top of the meta? Time and results will have to tell. Just like every combo deck out there: the deck is only as good as it is consistent and able to protect the combo once you have it on the table.

#2 Godsire $29.50 (+96.67%)

Godsire

This spike surprises me a bit. Both Godsire and the populate keyword have been around for years. The card has held a $6 price tag; which is on the high side for a card that does not see any play outside EDH and Casual. But the price was fitting for the power and potential of the card.

Today you will have to dig out an additional $24 to get your hands on your copy of Godsire for your EDH deck. The reason: the announcement of the Primal Genesis Commander 2019 box set.

This box set revolves around populate. But what is the biggest token you can populate? Outside the cards that create X/X tokens by paying mana or life. And outside Marit Lage Token, the biggest and best supplier for beefy tokens is Godsire. The spike on it seems understandable.

But there is a catch. The $29.50 price tag is way too much, and the result of a buyout. It's market price does not move beyond $10, and currently, the large stores are out of copies. Also on MKM there are no English copies left. €9,- seems to be where the price is ending up, coinciding with the $10 price tag.

Think before you buy in this case. Maybe wait it out. And don't trade into the $30 price if someone proposes this to you. Godsire will likely get much cheaper, but still much more expensive than the $6 it was before.

#3 Swords that work with Stoneforge Mystic

There is much abrew around Stoneforge Mystic now it can become a Modern staple once again. It was banned very quickly when modern was still in its infancy and still a MTGO-format. A lot has changed since then, so its unbanning can lead to new strategies and new tier decks.

This week, three cards have spiked that have a relation with Stoneforge Mystic and its unbanning.

Sword of Light and Shadow $59.92 (+57.68%)
Sword of Light and Shadow

Sword of Fire and Ice $108.79 (+23.48%)
Sword of Fire and Ice

Sword of the Meek $27.18 (+16.80%)
Sword of the Meek

Sword of Light and Shadow and Sword of Fire and Ice are most prominently featured in these decks:

White Weenie by Rebus8

Bant by Ignacioparot

And Sword of the Meek is featured in these kind of lists:

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Gideon Blackblade $7.88 - Record low and going down
Gideon Blackblade

Flagstones of Trokair $7.45 - Record low, bottoming out
Flagstones of Trokair

Echo of Eons $7.79 - Record low, bottomed out
Echo of Eons

Flagstones of Trokair CardKingdom $4.99 TCGPlayer $5.18
Gideon Blackblade CardKingdom $6.99 TCGPlayer $7.88
Echo of Eons CardKingdom $7.99 TCGPlayer $7.79
