Weekly Winners 2019 - 02

Quite a few surprising and maybe even puzzling spikes. Spoiler season is in full swing and we can see the results of that in our interests and in our weekly winners. Be sure to check the Cheap Pickups, we have an iconic Magic card that's at a record low!

#1 Scryb Ranger $4.99 (+362.04%)

Scryb Ranger

Last week we've covered a number of cards that are connected to the printing of Prime Speaker Vannifar. Our #1 winner this week has everything to do with that new Legend. For reasons related to both Modern and Commander. Brewing has started early and don't be surprised about that: it happens a lot when really interesting and/or powerful cards are spoiled.

Please note that Scryb Ranger spiked yesterday and Prime Speaker Vannifar was spoiled last week. It took over 7 days for people to notice Scryb Ranger and what strategies it might enable in Modern and Commander. EDH enthusiasts were discussing the card in several forums over the past 4 to 5 days. Scryb Ranger can be used to create several insane and complex combos in decks where Prime Speaker Vannifar is the commander. But even when you don't use an elaborate combo, Scryb Ranger can be used, by itself (and a few forests) to untap Prime Speaker Vannifar and activate it two times. But blink it with a combo, and it gets even better!

EDH speculation and brewing did not immediately lead to a price increase. But that did happen when SaffronOlive created an 'Instant Deck Tech' video about Prime Speaker Vannifar and posted it yesterday. Hours after publishing Scryb Ranger was sold out and today we see the results and see how hard the card spiked. Check out the video below and the decklist here.

#2 Elenda, the Dusk Rose $14.42 (+75.43%)

Elenda, the Dusk Rose

Hold your horses! Something smells fishy with this #2 winner this week. The reason is simple: Elenda, the Dusk Rose is not a good card. It is just a 1/1 body for with an interesting ability, but you will need to do a lot to get this card to work properly. You will need a way to sacrifice your creatures, and a way to get a lot of creatures. And even then, Elenda, the Dusk Rose dies to everything that does 1 damage (or more) to it, and that's the least you can do, right?!

Elenda, the Dusk Rose sees no play in Standard. Almost nobody plays the card in Arena (except people that need an Orzhov filler to fill out their curve). No play in modern, legacy or vintage. But still, you'd think that it is insanely good in some format, right? Well.. WRONG. There is no insane, unbeatable EDH deck either. A check on EDHREC.com reveals that just 122 decks are listed that play Elenda, the Dusk Rose. To put that in perspective, an obscure legend like Johan has 50 decks listed.

There are only 2 plausible reasons I can think of right now to explain the extreme price tag on an almost unused card. Reason 1 would be that someone connected to Wizards knows that we'll get a new card in Ravnica Allegiance that will make Elenda, the Dusk Rose fantastic. Reason 2 seems the most plausible: someone is doing a strategic buyout to increase the price on this card to turn a profit. Supply is very low and new cards that are brought to stores are getting bought (and sold) for a high price.

#3 Fellwar Stone $2.99 (+67.98%)

Fellwar Stone

Fellwar Stone sees a lot of play in EDH. With over 31.500 decks listed that use the card! The reason for the Commander 2015 printing is simple: it sold out in webstores, causing the card to spike above the $2 it was on for the past few months. Other printings of the card (and there are many) have not moved and are still around $2. Expect this printing of Fellwar Stone to dwindle back to its old price. It's either that or all other printings have to move up to $3. And that's not the most likely scenario.

Weekly Winners 2021 - 36

Just like last week, the Commander: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt spoilers are the main factor of influence on the markets this week. There are enough cards spoiled for the brewing to commence and we expect a lot more movement in the coming weeks!

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

Catalyst Stone Daybreak Ranger Oboro, Palace in the Clouds

Weekly Winners 2021 - 13

This week we saw a lot of interesting movement. Most of it caused by Strixhaven spoilers, but the old frame fetchlands spiked as well.

Chain of Smog Illumination Magma Sliver

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

Selective Memory Pearl Medallion Zombie Master

Weekly Winners 2021 - 08

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.

Ethereal Forager Stifle Allosaurus Shepherd

Weekly Winners 2021 - 07

An interesting week, again driven by old card speculation and EDH. But we also have a special edition of Cheap Pickups, with a new way to look at cards that are (still) cheap pickups, but might go up later.

Shivan Dragon Sapphire Medallion Elvish Champion

Weekly Winners 2021 - 05

A strange and eventful week in the world of finance. Where you'd expect tons of cards to spike due to new brews, we mainly see a new hausse of reserved list cards being bought out. And also non-reserved list cards that happen to be MTG classics.
