Weekly Winners 2020 - 45

Just like last week, it is EDH driving the Magic markets this week. The Commander Legends spoilers are sinking in and people are busy brewing new decks.

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

See something interesting in the world of card prices? Be sure to pitch me a tweet: @MTGPeter

#1 Last Chance $59.99 (+174.55%)

Last Chance

Key race alert! Last Chance is up with a margin of 174.55% in comparison to its price last week. And not only its print in Starter is up, its other version from Portal is also picking up value.

We don't usually cover cards from introductory sets. The print run of these is so low, that spikes can occur when there is just a small amount of trade. But in this case, I do have something significant to report.

Last Chance is winning terrain because of the new, hot commander that was spoiled last week: Obeka, Brute Chronologist. With Obeka, you can cheat your way out of any negative consequences by ending the turn, before resolving all the spells. Your opponents might love to see all spells counted, resolved, and tallied. But why wait if you can end things before all rules and effects are played out?

Who doesn't want to play a Phyrexian Dreadnought and end the turn before its drawback ability gets resolved? Or, you might already expect, Last Chance. Because Obeka says that the stack is emptied, this is also the case for all the abilities and triggers on the stack. Including drawbacks and game losing consequences.

No surprise that cards that work well with the new commander are up. But will Last Chance's price stick? It just might, since the printrun is so low that even a small uptick in demand can spike the price. But, the deck does need to prove itself. If it is not as powerful, people will abandon it and the corresponding cards might tank back to lower prices.

Last Chance CardKingdom $22.99 TCGPlayer $59.99
Last Chance CardKingdom $21.99 TCGPlayer $49.99
Phyrexian Dreadnought CardKingdom $69.99 TCGPlayer $59.99
Obeka, Brute Chronologist CardKingdom $0.79 TCGPlayer $1.21

#2 Final Fortune $13.20 (+493.33%)

Final Fortune

Cards that grant players an extra turn are always good to keep an eye on. If you get them to work (almost all have serious drawbacks), getting an extra turn is extremely powerful and in many situations game winning.

Final Fortune has always been one of the least popular cards in this category. It is cheaply costed in mana, with only , but you do need to win at the end of your extra turn or you will lose the game. It gained some value over the past months, but spiked to new heights due to Obeka, Brute Chronologist.

It is a good example of how much the print run of a card matters. Compared to recent sets, Classic Sixth Edition and Mirage are small sets too in that sense. But much bigger than Portal and Starter.

If you compare the two cards, Final Fortune is strictly better. Their effect and mana cost are the same, but Final Fortune is an instant. That small detail can make a lot of difference. You'll see that reflected in the value of the cards. But in this case, Last Chance has a much higher price.

That small print run matters between $35 and $45 with these cards.

Final Fortune CardKingdom $7.99 TCGPlayer $19.95
Final Fortune CardKingdom $9.99 TCGPlayer $15.49

#3 Horn of Greed $12.50 (+22.55%)

Horn of Greed

There are many other cards that have seen a bigger uptrend this week than Horn of Greed. But it has been a #4 or #5 winner for over a month and a half now. So this week, I want to point it out and cover the reasons why it is up.

If you look back at its history, Horn of Greed has been at a high point before. And it is at an all time high now. When it was up in 2016, the reason was the same: landfall. Whenever casual and EDH formats are filled with land-matter decks; Horn of Greed goes up in price. It not only works for your own deck, but also for your opponents

While its effect is symmetrical, it is not that hard to make it (more) beneficial for you. If you run a ramping strategy, you'll make more landdrops than your opponents. Also with cards like Narset, Parter of Veils you can make sure you are the only one to draw extra.

Horn of Greed
Stronghold CardKingdom $10.99 TCGPlayer $12.50

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Ugin, the Spirit Dragon $23.95 - Record low, bottoming out

Paradox Engine $5.17 - Record low, bottoming out
