Weekly Winners 2020 - 43

This week features a ton of small, low percentage spikes. That's something that doesn't happen very often; and it is a great opportunity to give some well-deserved attention to cards that normally don't make the cut for the Weekly Winners!

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

#1 Corsair Captain $4.50 (+71%)

Corsair Captain

Always keep an eye out for 'lords': the type of creatures that give +1/+1 to all (other) creatures of a certain type. You probably know them well: Sliver Legion - ($91.95); Deranged Hermit - ($24.94); Knight Exemplar - ($10.29) and Master of the Pearl Trident - ($2.99) to name a few (there are many more).

Corsair Captain might be the newest addition to this list! When going for a tribal deck in any format, having a Lord to crank your army up is especially good. The Pirate archetype is far from new, but Jumpstart did add an extra Lord to the mix by printing Corsair Captain.

Corsair Captain sees play in EDH: in deck commanded by Admiral Beckett Brass - ($1.67). With the 1 card limit, it is nice to have another piece in your deck that can +1/+1 your creatures. Especially when competing against other tribal deck, that have access to different lords that boost the tribe. Check out the EDHRec.com page on Pirate Tribal to get a good overview of all the cards associated with the deck.

THIS NEXT PARAGRAPH IS GOING TO ADDRESS THE Commander Legends LEAKS. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW SKIP IT

But another, and pretty likely explanation, are the leaks from the upcoming Commander Legends. We usually try to avoid talking about unofficial spoilers (aka leaks), but ignoring a leak of this size really is trying to ignore the elephant in the room. The leaks show that the Pirates tribal will get some new cards. This definitely will have an effect on the existing lords in the tribal since it opens up more possibilities for Commander decks revolving around this tribal.

Sliver Legion CardKingdom $109.99 TCGPlayer $91.95
Deranged Hermit CardKingdom $24.99 TCGPlayer $24.94
Master of the Pearl Trident CardKingdom $4.49 TCGPlayer $2.99
Knight Exemplar CardKingdom $14.99 TCGPlayer $10.29
Admiral Beckett Brass CardKingdom $2.49 TCGPlayer $1.67
Corsair Captain CardKingdom $3.49 TCGPlayer $4.50

#2 Rotlung Reanimator $13.20 (+121.94%)

Rotlung Reanimator

Ah, the nostalgia! I remember well playing against my good friend's Cleric deck back in 2003. It featured Rotlung Reanimator, but also a ton of clerics, including Dark Supplicant - ($0.26) and Scion of Darkness - ($2.29). He could sacrifice three clerics to get his Scion of Darkness and get three zombie tokens in the process. Back in the day, that was almost always, game, set and match! Love to see Rotlung Reanimator popping up in the Weekly Winners in 2020.

But Rotlung Reanimator's recent price hike has nothing to do with obscure rares from Legions. It is however connected to a freshly printed commander from Zendikar Rising: Orah, Skyclave Hierophant - ($0.41). You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that Rotlung Reanimator's ability works extremely well with the new commander!

Good synergy with a new commander is not enough for a card to trend up in price. The commander must become part of a deck, and that deck needs to get enough good results as well. Oh, and what also helps is when a deck gets featured on streams or other online content. Well, its all of the above for Orah, Skyclave Hierophant. Check out the short video below from Good Morning Magic (from 2:02 on).

Rotlung Reanimator started to increase in price at the beginning of September and it has all the hallmarks of an organic, demand driven spike. But its recent price gain seems a tad steep and it might have attracted some speculators too.

Check out this decklist for a good example of a deck with Rotlung Reanimator.

#3 Polluted Delta $49.72 (+5.88%)

Polluted Delta

Our third winner this week is also from Onslaught. In weeks with (much) bigger spikes, the smaller uptrends get buried. Not this week, it allows me to write about a Modern, Legacy and Vintage staple that has been on the rise for quite some time, albeit very gradually.

April 2020 was the low point for Polluted Delta, when looking at it in a 24-month perspective. It then had a $39.20 price tag. That price is about the same as the card has had for a long time since it was reprinted in Khans of Tarkir.

But Polluted Delta is trending up since April and it is about to break the $50 mark. The card is not going to be reprinted soon, it is the #6 most played card in Legacy, the #10 in Vintage and #19 in Modern. On top of that it is featured in 14% of all EDH decks on record. It seems that the only way for Polluted Delta is up.

Polluted Delta
Onslaught CardKingdom $54.99 TCGPlayer $49.72
Khans of Tarkir CardKingdom $32.99 TCGPlayer $29.20

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Grove of the Burnwillows $10.13 - Record low and trending down

More from Peter:

Weekly Winners 2021 - 36

Just like last week, the Commander: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt spoilers are the main factor of influence on the markets this week. There are enough cards spoiled for the brewing to commence and we expect a lot more movement in the coming weeks!

Catalyst Stone Daybreak Ranger Oboro, Palace in the Clouds

Deserted Temple Mox Tantalite Windswept Heath

For the first time since the COVID pandemic hit, our interest page looks like normal for a change! Many (huge) spikes from different sets and eras. I choose to see this as an omen of better times ahead!

Chain of Smog Illumination Magma Sliver

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

Selective Memory Pearl Medallion Zombie Master

Weekly Winners 2021 - 08

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.

A strange and eventful week in the world of finance. Where you'd expect tons of cards to spike due to new brews, we mainly see a new hausse of reserved list cards being bought out. And also non-reserved list cards that happen to be MTG classics.
