Weekly Winners 2020 - 41

This week is an interesting mixed bag of three spikes because of EDH, Standard and multi-format popularity. And all of them organic spikes with real demand behind them.

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

See something interesting in the world of card prices? Be sure to pitch me a tweet: @MTGPeter

#1 Crescendo of War $12.65 (+270.97%) - ALL TIME HIGH

Crescendo of War

A very interesting #1 winner this week! Crescendo of War has been around for a long time, printed in the first Commander preconstructed theme deck set from 2011. And it has been a $0.50 rare for many, many years.

2020 really changed that as the card kept creeping and trending up. A good example of the price increase due to organic demand. But still, even with more play in Commander, Crescendo of War only sees play in 696 decks listed on EDHRec.com.

So, what warranted its huge spike this week?

The answer begins how the last paragraph ended: EDHRec.com. In the October 2 EDHRECast, Crescendo of War was given a lot of love and praise for being a card that scales well in EDH. As a consequence, the card spiked as players jumped on it. I have seen no evidence of a speculative buyout, at least not in the regular finance groups I lurk.

Check out the EDHREC video below. From 36:40 onwards they talk about Crescendo of War.

Crescendo of War
Commander CardKingdom $5.49 TCGPlayer $12.65

#2 Keeper of Keys $6.88 (+121.94%)

Keeper of Keys

Just like last week, Rogues are still hot as hell this week. Keeper of Keys popped up in our interest list last week as well, but below the threshold to get included in the article. This week is different, as it is our #2 winner.

Keeper of Keys uses the monarch keyword to make your creatures unblockable, something that's nice in itself. Especially if you land Keeper of Keys as your last play before an all out attack. But the card can be used in many other, less blunt ways.

And more specifically: in combination with Anowon, the Ruin Thief. With that and a good swing from your creatures, you get to damage, mill and draw cards. If that doesn't put you ahead in the game, nothing will!

Keeper of Keys
Conspiracy: Take the Crown CardKingdom $4.99 TCGPlayer $6.88

#3 Drown in the Loch $3.00 (+50.75%) - ALL TIME HIGH

Drown in the Loch

Three dollars might not seem much for a card. But do note that Drown in the Loch is from a 2019 set with a huge print run! If you check out the Throne of Eldraine set page, and filter for uncommons only; you'll notice that Drown in the Loch is by far the most expensive uncommon in the set. Followed by Mystical Dispute at $1.36 and Cauldron Familiar at $0.93.

To put it into some more perspective. We need to go back 5 more sets to find an uncommon with a bigger price tag: Pitiless Plunderer from Rivals of Ixalan at $5.06.

Drown in the Loch's spike in price is not strange. It has become an all-format card, with play in Standard, Modern, Legacy and even Vintage. And with 6436 listed decks it has found its way into EDH as well. The popularity of the Dimir standard deck has pushed the card further than it already was.

Mystical Dispute CardKingdom $1.49 TCGPlayer $1.36
Cauldron Familiar CardKingdom $0.35 TCGPlayer $0.93
Drown in the Loch CardKingdom $3.49 TCGPlayer $3.00
Pitiless Plunderer CardKingdom $4.49 TCGPlayer $5.06

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Force of Will $89.75 - Record low and bottoming out
Force of Will

Batterskull $9.00 - Record low and bottoming out
Batterskull

Dark Confidant $35.35 - Record low and trending down hard
Dark Confidant

Force of Will CardKingdom $109.99 TCGPlayer $89.75
Dark Confidant CardKingdom $32.99 TCGPlayer $35.35

Just like last week, the Commander: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt spoilers are the main factor of influence on the markets this week. There are enough cards spoiled for the brewing to commence and we expect a lot more movement in the coming weeks!

Chain of Smog Illumination Magma Sliver

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

Selective Memory Pearl Medallion Zombie Master

Weekly Winners 2021 - 08

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.
