Weekly Winners 2020 - 40

The Weekly Winners are going Rogue this week! Well, what we mean is that Rogue-tribal is the biggest supplier of spikes this week and we'll take you on a tour around Standard and EDH to show you why.

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

See something interesting in the world of card prices? Be sure to pitch me a tweet: @MTGPeter

MTGStocks is now on Alexa

MTGStocks launched their Alexa skill. All you have to do is Enable it within your account and you can simply ask Alexa what the prices are of certain cards while you keep playing with your friends.

Ask Alexa for the price of a card like this:

  • Alexa, ask MTGStocks; what is the price of Force of Will?
  • Alexa, ask MTGStocks; what is the price of Force of Will from Eternal Masters?

If you have a screen on your Alexa device, she will also show you an image of the card plus several additional prices.

#1 Thieves' Guild Enforcer $4.99 (+399.00%) - ALL TIME HIGH

Thieves' Guild Enforcer

Despite that guards from all over Cyrodiil claim that the Thieves Guild is fake news, you'll come to the realization that, in fact, the Guild is alive and kicking when your opponents flashes their one mana, 3/2 deathtouch to block and kill your best creature. Thieves' Guild Enforcer is the #1 winner this week and for good reason!

First off, Thieves' Guild Enforcer is a 4-off in two of the best Standard decks currently around: Dimir Control and Dimir Rogues. And the second reason: the new EDH brews around Rogue tribal. The first I'll cover here, the second when I get to winner #2.

Bannings almost always effect the magic markets. And the latest ban is that of Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath in standard. Part of the insanely powerful and effective Four-Color Omnath deck, its banning seemed inevitable as tournament results showed that almost all good performing decks were using Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath.

With Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath gone, the Standard meta has to resolve itself again. And this almost always attracts attention to the decks already performing well in the meta. And Thieves' Guild Enforcer is a part of two powerful Dimir builds. One with a strategy built around milling your opponent, the other is a Rogue-tribal strategy. Check out the decklists below.

Both Dimir decks are contenders for the new top spot in the post-Uro Standard meta, and that attracts attention and with that trade. Thieves' Guild Enforcer's spike is partly caused by this, and looks like a good example of an organic, demand driven spike.

#2 Inkfathom Infiltrator $4.96 (+239%)

Inkfathom Infiltrator

But Standard is far from the only reason that Thieves' Guild Enforcer spiked. And the fact that our #2 winner this week is Inkfathom Infiltrator proves that.

When you think of a tribe, you might think about Elves, Soldiers, Goblins, Merfolk and Zombies. And rogues might not even make it into your top 20. And that's quite understandable because rogues is above all a creature subtype. Creatures are Merfolk, Human or Faerie first.

Well, that time is over. The printing of Anowon, the Ruin Thief makes Rogues great again. With that commander it's Rogues First!

For those of you that are still questioning the strength of a deck that revolves around a creature subtype, please not that all of these (and more) creatures are in fact rogues: Brazen Borrower, Blighted Agent, Rankle, Master of Pranks, Sygg, River Cutthroat, Nighthawk Scavenger and True-Name Nemesis.

And let's not forget our actual #2 winner: Inkfathom Infiltrator. It works well with Anowon, the Ruin Thief as that card triggers when combat damage is done, and Inkfathom Infiltrator is unblockable. Even without that trigger, a 3/2 unblockable is a tasty clock to have on your side of the battlefield.

#3 Omnath, Locus of the Roil $15.50 (+116.78%) - ALL TIME HIGH

Omnath, Locus of the Roil

Wait! Before you think that I'm linking the wrong Omnath here... Our #3 winner really is Omnath, Locus of the Roil and not Omnath, Locus of Creation. But its spike is caused by that other Omnath.

Speaking in general terms, Omnath, Locus of Creation is one of the best cards recently printed and enables not only insane decks in Standard, but it has found its way into EDH and Modern too. There are even people experimenting with it in Legacy and Vintage. Not many cards are able to check the complete list of competitive paper formats, and Omnath, Locus of Creation might be on its way there.

Omnath, Locus of the Roil's spike is caused by the popularity of Omnath, Locus of Creation as the hottest new commander. And that, plus the demand it already has from decks commanded by Omnath, Locus of the Roil itself, and its addition in a slew of other 4 color EDH decks.

Also: check out Omnath, Locus of Mana. With $41.00 it is at an all time high this week!
