Weekly Winners 2020 - 35

Another week filled with Reserved list spikes and price hikes and it was quite a challenge to filter through al those bizarre spikes to find the more interesting winners to present to you this week. Just like last week, we will not share the cards that had the biggest percentual change, but the most interesting or impactful winners this week.

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

See something interesting in the world of card prices? Be sure to pitch me a tweet: @MTGPeter

#1 Mox Diamond $699.99 (+14.28%) - ALL TIME HIGH

Mox Diamond

Mox Diamond has seen price spikes in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. But nowhere near the heights of its spike over the past week and weeks before. Many reserved list cards are trending up, but Mox Diamond is one of the very few that actually sees play in a competitive format and is actually worth a 3 digit price tag.

Its current price hike is very probably way to high for what the card is actually worth. As you might notice on the card page, its market price is not following suit and its uptrend actually broke this week and its market price has even fallen a bit.

Mox Diamond is not in an uptrending or new deck, neither is it in higher demand from people actually playing the card. Its current spike is most probably the result of people speculating on the Reserved List. An other likely explanation is that due to Covid and lockdowns the supply of cards to sellers is disrupted; this could potentially have a disrupting effect on supply and demand. To put it simpler: less copies are up for sale, and the demand could slowly but surely outpace the supply. And that could be a factor in prices going up.

#2 Revised edition Dual Lands

Volcanic Island

Tropical Island and Bayou have reached an all time high this week! And Volcanic Island is seriously trending up, but nowhere near an all time high.

Of all the reserved list cards the Dual Lands are the most widely played pieces and absolute cornerstones of the Legacy and Vintage formats. Demand for these cards is high and the cards see actual play in many decks across the Eternal formats. For those unfamiliar, there are decks that have no or just a few basic lands, their slots taken by Duals.

Over the past weeks, many Reserved List cards have been going up. Most of them are unreasonable and probably unsustainable price hikes. There are a few exceptions, and the Dual Lands are one.

But these high prices have a very big downside for the health of the eternal formats. Mana bases are extremely important in both Vintage and Legacy. And only very few decks can omit the Duals Lands and still be competitive. These high powered formats need high powered mana bases. And as the prices rise, these lands become ever more unobtainable.

#3 Final Fortune $10.38 (+73.29%) - ALL TIME HIGH

Final Fortune

I'm happy to report that there is more to this financial week than just Reserved List spikes. Final Fortune broke its all time record this week topping $10 for the first time.

As frequent readers of this article probably know by now, there are certain types of cards in Magic that get a value bonus. Cards with alternative casting costs for instance, or Planeswalkers. Another example fits Final Fortune: cards that grant you an extra turn.

Many players get itchy and brewy when they happen upon cards that are fun to play and even better to win the game with. And playing Final Fortune is quite a thing, because if your plan does not pan out, you will lose the game.

Aside from that value bonus, Final Fortune's spike in value this week is caused by some "new" EDH tech! The card sees play in decks with Godo, Bandit Warlord. Although recently reprinted in Double Masters, Godo, Bandit Warlord has been around for many years in previous printings. But as we have noticed with other EDH relevant reprints, a new printing of a card can attract new attention to existing commanders and the cards you can play alongside it.

Godo, Bandit Warlord will grant you an extra attack phase. Play Final Fortune after that and you will get an additional two attacks in your next turn. If that doesn't win you the game, you deserve to lose I guess :-).

But do note that the playrate of Godo, Bandit Warlord and Final Fortune are not particularly high at the moment. My view is that a small uptick in demand led Final Fortune to go out of stock, driving up the price a bit.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.
