Weekly Winners 2020 - 18

The MTG market looks a lot different this week. Not many spikes related to new decks or techs. Many spikes we do see are evergreen staples from EDH, Legacy and Modern. Some speculate that this caused by the US stimulus checks.

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

#1 Chrome Mox $99.99 (+17.68%)

Chrome Mox

Chrome Mox has spiked this week and jumped to an all time high record. Currently, the card is in very low supply (or sold out) in many of the big online stores. Also, the market price for Chrome Mox has been going up steadily as well.

The price development of Chrome Mox is very interesting. It seems that that the supply of the card has dropped, but demand for the card is at a high point. In other words: the best recipe for a steady increase in price.

Demand for the card comes from competitive EDH players mainly, but Chrome Mox sees some play in Legacy as well. It fits the list of other key mana artifacts in EDH like Mox Diamond and Sol Ring.

Chrome Mox 's spike fits a trend that is becoming visible due to the Coronavirus situation. Cards that are deemed to hold value due to their uniqueness and lower print run are seeing upticks over the past week. Still, we don't see a huge surge on reserved list cards in general. There are more RL cards in our interests than before, but in fewer numbers than cards like Chrome Mox that are not on the reserved list.

#2 Wheel of Fortune $187.44 (+42.99%)

Wheel of Fortune

Before you think that a 42.99% increase price is on the low side for a weekly winner, I invite you to look at Wheel of Fortune absolute price increase. Compared to last week, you'll need to pay a whopping $56.35 more to buy a single copy of Wheel of Fortune.

Wheel of Fortune is one of the cards on the reserved list that had big price increases this week. This one made it to the Weekly Winners because of its uses in EDH. Especially when you look at one of the newest commanders from Ikoria: Rielle, the Everwise!

Besides this, Wheel of Fortune is seen in many other EDH decks and it's also a classic Magic card that has inspired some other cards with similar, but less powerful wording. This makes it a card that is bound to hold value, and that is a big plus in these troubling times.

Wheel of Fortune CardKingdom $139.99 TCGPlayer $187.44
Rielle, the Everwise CardKingdom $16.99 TCGPlayer $18.58

#3 Misty Rainforest $94.99 (+6.91%)

Misty Rainforest

Like mentioned before, cards that are bound to hold their value are popular. Not only this week, but also over the past few months. Another good example of these kinds of cards is Misty Rainforest. Both prints are nearing the $100 mark. And the Zendikar Expedition version of Misty Rainforest has spiked this week as well, going from $259 to $320 in 8 days.

The reason is as simple as it is boring. Misty Rainforest is one of the most played fetch lands in all format, together with all blue fetch lands. If you want to put some of your money into Magic cards, Misty Rainforest is a very safe (and very expensive) place to put it.

Many speculate online that the US stimulus checks are being used by Magic players to buy into these valuable staples. It seems logical: if you don't need the money right away, you can spend it on Magic cards that are in high demand, are expected to hold their value and are easy to sell once you need the money. It's still a risk though... Will there be people willing to pay $90 for a copy when you need your stimulus money back? Or has the Magic market crashed in the meantime because people are turning their staples into dinners and car payments?

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Gideon Blackblade $5.50 - Record low, market price slightly up!

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.

An interesting week, again driven by old card speculation and EDH. But we also have a special edition of Cheap Pickups, with a new way to look at cards that are (still) cheap pickups, but might go up later.

Feb 5, 2021

A strange and eventful week in the world of finance. Where you'd expect tons of cards to spike due to new brews, we mainly see a new hausse of reserved list cards being bought out. And also non-reserved list cards that happen to be MTG classics.
