Weekly Winners 2019 - 19

Another very interesting Finance week in Magic! Modern rings the bell this week and delivers all three winners. And all three are related to new deck tech that uses the new London Mulligan to their advantage.

#1 Autochthon Wurm $7.80 (+628.97%)

Autochthon Wurm

It seems that the Weekly Winners continues where we left off last week. Last week, Allosaurus Rider was our #1 winner. It spiked because of London Mulligan related combo deck tech for Modern. If you want to read up on this new deck and see an example of a deck list, check out last week's article on it.

Autochthon Wurm is not just an unplayable rare that only excites the newest of Magic players, it is now also part of a Modern combo deck. Just like before, Autochthon Wurm is not meant to actually (hard)cast; but to be used in a different way. The Modern Neoform deck uses Griselbrand and Nourishing Shoal to keep drawing cards. So what is the most expensive costed green creature in Modern? Right: Autochthon Wurm.

Expect Autochthon Wurm to start dwindling in price. Cards like these are most often found in stashed away shoeboxes, slush piles and forgotten binders. As soon as people pick up Autochthon Wurm's new price they are probably quite keen to trade or sell it.

Autochthon Wurm
Ravnica CardKingdom $3.99 TCGPlayer $7.80

#2 Day's Undoing $11.70 (+293.94%)

Day's Undoing

Many people find it hard to really evaluate the value of a card when it is first spoiled. Traditionally, pre-release prices are way too high and many cards that seem very, very good turn out to be huge, huge disappointments. That used to be the life story of Day's Undoing. At first, a card that lets you shuffle stuff back and drawing new cards seems powerful. Right? A lot of people thought so. Before release Day's Undoing topped $20. But the card fall back to around $2.60 over time.

But it seems that Day's Undoing finally has its day! Magic Player Conley Woods has 5-0'd a Narset Modern deck that runs 4 copies of Day's Undoing. If you want to see the deck in action, check out Conley's Twitch stream with the deck. And if you want to start playing the deck, check out its primer on MTGSalvation.

It is hard to predict where the price of Day's Undoing is going in the coming weeks and months. Currently, it has seemed to have settled around the $12 mark. The Market prices caught up with it so it seems that those $12 are a fair price for the card at this time. When the Narset Modern deck picks up some more steam (and more important: tournament wins) the way for Day's Undoing is up. Also when you take into account that the card sees some play in EDH as well.

But when the Narset deck fails to net lasting results and become a stable part of the meta, Day's Undoing's price will take big hits. But always keep an eye out for it. Cards like these have a chance to become part of some insane and lasting combo.

Day's Undoing
Magic Origins CardKingdom $8.99 TCGPlayer $11.70

#3 Commandeer $24.37 (+209.26%)

Commandeer

One of my favorite rules of thumb is: always buy a playset of cards with alternative costs. Cards like Force of Will and (like last week) Allosaurus Rider have a way of finding themselves into competitive constructive. The same is true for Commandeer.

It was already comfortably sitting around $7.50 before this week's spike. It saw a little play in EDH, Legacy and Modern. But just like our #2 winner this week, Commandeer spiked because of the new Narset Modern deck.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Plains (full art) $5.69 - Record low and bottoming out

Prime Speaker Vannifar $6 - Record low and bottomed out

Weekly Winners 2021 - 36

Just like last week, the Commander: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt spoilers are the main factor of influence on the markets this week. There are enough cards spoiled for the brewing to commence and we expect a lot more movement in the coming weeks!

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

Catalyst Stone Daybreak Ranger Oboro, Palace in the Clouds

Weekly Winners 2021 - 13

This week we saw a lot of interesting movement. Most of it caused by Strixhaven spoilers, but the old frame fetchlands spiked as well.

Deserted Temple Mox Tantalite Windswept Heath

For the first time since the COVID pandemic hit, our interest page looks like normal for a change! Many (huge) spikes from different sets and eras. I choose to see this as an omen of better times ahead!

Chain of Smog Illumination Magma Sliver

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

Selective Memory Pearl Medallion Zombie Master

Weekly Winners 2021 - 08

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.

Ethereal Forager Stifle Allosaurus Shepherd

An interesting week, again driven by old card speculation and EDH. But we also have a special edition of Cheap Pickups, with a new way to look at cards that are (still) cheap pickups, but might go up later.

A strange and eventful week in the world of finance. Where you'd expect tons of cards to spike due to new brews, we mainly see a new hausse of reserved list cards being bought out. And also non-reserved list cards that happen to be MTG classics.
