The recent Legacy bannings are having a visible influence on the markets as the Legacy format shifts. Old, obsolete decks might emerge and as powerlevels change, certain staples spike.
#1 Peat Bog $3.52 (+1,157.14%)
Always keep an extra eye out for cards that either have an alternative cost, or produce more than one mana when tapping. Peat Bog is the black version of a cycle of lands from Mercadian Masques called depletion lands. This cycle is not only fairly unknown, it is also underappreciated. Coming into play tapped is surely a drawback, but being able to produce two mana twice is a neat trick for decks that start slow, but need to build tempo fast.
Peat Bog spiked this week because it was bought out on TCGPlayer. Interestingly, some other stores have it in stock for a far lower price and the European price is just β¬0.23. The card has just recently popped up in some UB-Control decks in Pauper. Including one top 5 Pauper league finish that ran 4 copies of Peat Bog.
What Peat Bog's price will do in the coming weeks in unclear. It all depends on the question if the card will have a definitive breakthrough in Pauper. But even outside pauper, the card will remain a interesting card to run in Casual and EDH decks.
Goblin Lackey has doubled in price this week. An understandable spike, since the recent Legacy bannings makes the Goblin archetype a tournament playable deck again. Now those pesky Deathrite Shamans are out of the way, Goblin Lackey can make an impact again.
Goblins is one of the most agressive decks in Legacy. But Goblin Lackey really has an important role in the deck. Being able to say "Mountain, Lackey, Go!" on your first turn is the best thing when playing the deck. When your opponent does not have a creatue to block Goblin Lackey, you will be able to drop another Goblin into play for free like Goblin Matron or Goblin Ringleader. And with those Goblins, you can push the tempo.
And that is also the reason why Deathrite Shaman was such a big problem for the deck. Since so many decks ran Deathrite Shaman, you will face a 1/2 blocker in a lot of matchups, rendering your Goblin Lackey pretty useless. Just that one 1/2 onedrop can take away the tempo for Goblins.
It is going to be very interesting to see what type of Goblin decks will emerge now that Deathrite Shaman is out of the way. Six years have passed since its printing and many new Goblins have emerged since. One interesting build from the MTGO Legacy Challenge this week is a version of the deck.
#3 Karakas $57.66 (+15.34%)
Arjen has reported twice on Karakas in the past week. In last week's Weekly Winners and in our fairly new segment #ButWhy. But Karakas keeps coming back, and it is all due to the recent Legacy bannings.
The Death & Taxes archetype is much stronger now Grixis Delver is out of the way. And another driving force is that Death & Taxes is great against other decks that get stronger due to the unbannings like Sneak Attack, Reanimator and Dredge.
Also note that with a price of around $1,100 Death & Taxes is the cheapest tier Legacy deck available. You don't need duals for the deck. But with this spike, you do need to put some more money down for some copies of Karakas.
