Weekly Winners 2020 - 07

The past weeks have proven to be particularly interesting in the world of Magic finance. And this week is no different. It was yet again hard to choose between all the different cards that went up in price. This week I can present you three cards that have gone up in price due to organic demand!!

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

#1 Robber of the Rich $5.10 (+153.73%)

Robber of the Rich

During the prerelease, Robber of the Rich was initially overhyped. You should never really trust pre-release prices and the price development of Robber of the Rich is a good example why. When first spoiled, the card had a $15 price tag. Which fell back to around $10 quickly. But as time progressed, Robber of the Rich became a two-buck mythic that was destined to end up in the cheaper sections of our trade binders.

But this week something happened. First of all, Mono-Red (or Red Deck Wins) is performing strongly in Standard, after the release of the newest Theros set. Almost all red decks have moved away from Cavalcade of Calamity and into a new type of deck build which plays 4 copies of Robber of the Rich. These decks are also very prevalent in MTGA best-of-one ranked format.

On top of this, Worlds 2020 is happening. And more specifically, it turned out that Robber of the Rich is going to be the most played Mythic card in that tournament, skyrocketing interest for the card (and the deck it sees play in) for players and speculators alike. By the time of writing, Robber of the Rich is still sold out. This might be an indicator that its price will shoot up some more today and tomorrow.

Check out the decklist below to get an idea on what the deck it sees play in looks like:

One interesting thing to point out in the most current lists is the addition of four copies of Tin Street Dodger. This might not seem particularly relevant at first glance, but check out the wording on Robber of the Rich. It reads: During any turn you attacked with a Rogue, you may cast that card and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any color to cast that spell. Now check out the goblin's subtype. Well yes, it is a rogue indeed. And for you can make it practically unblockable and this will allow you to cast exiled cards, even when Robber of the Rich is in your graveyard or exile. Nice!

Tin Street Dodger CardKingdom $0.39 TCGPlayer $0.34
Robber of the Rich CardKingdom $5.99 TCGPlayer $5.10

#2 Vizier of Tumbling Sands $2.19 (+140.60%)

Vizier of Tumbling Sands

A $2.19 price tag does not seem much, but with that Vizier of Tumbling Sands is the most expensive uncommon in Amonkhet. It is even in the top20 of most pricey cards from that set. And when cards that are obviously a support card for something else spike, it is almost always part of a new combo or deck tech. That's the case for Vizier of Tumbling Sands.

It's all about Lotus Field - ($7.95 ; M20). Another new iteration of Black Lotus (Oversized), but in a more, balanced form. And also a card that instantly inspires the combo player to exploit in ways unthinkable to other minds. The fact that you need to sacrifice two lands and that it comes into play make the card far more balanced than the card it is based upon. But what if you can turn those drawbacks into a good thing?. Well, turns out you can.

With Vizier of Tumbling Sands you can untap it the turn it hits the battlefield (and in the turns after as well). And you can feed those sacrificed lands to Underworld Breach, turning that into an upside too.

Ready to see this in action? Check out the (1h30) video by Starcity Games below. Shorter deck techs are available on YouTube as well. Also check out the decklist below!

Vizier of Tumbling Sands CardKingdom $2.49 TCGPlayer $2.19
Lotus Field CardKingdom $8.99 TCGPlayer $7.95
Underworld Breach CardKingdom $4.99 TCGPlayer $4.00

#3 Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath $40 (+33.38%)

Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath

This card is not the #3 in winner by percentage points, but when you look at the actual value increase you will understand why the card is included in this installment of Weekly Winners. Just two weeks ago, a copy of Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath would have cost you $25. Today, you need to pay $40 for it, an increase of $15 in 14 days. And an increase of $10 in 7 days.

Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath is an absolute powerhouse in Standard's Simic ramp (#5 in the current meta). But there is more to its story. It sees play Pioneer, Modern and Legacy. Only a very small amount of cards see play in three or more formats, but Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath might become one of those. To give you an overview of the different strategies in different formats, check out the decklists below. To get a complete picture, be sure to check out all deck listings on the card page itself. For Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath sees play in different decks in the same formats.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Tarmogoyf $74.69 - Record low and stable
Tarmogoyf

The Royal Scions $9 - Record low and going down hard
The Royal Scions

Imperial Recruiter $118.73* - Around record low** and slow downward trend
Imperial Recruiter

*Extra info: $118.73 might not seem 'cheap', since it is an expensive card; but compared to its history, the card has never been more affordable in this printing. There are very few copies of the card available, even compared to other collector's set from the same era. For more info on Portal Three Kingdoms, check out this Wiki article..

**Extra info: the card has been a few dollars cheaper in the past days, but when looking at the market price development over the past 14 months, a slow but steady downward trend is visible.

Ensnaring Bridge $33.01 - Record low and going down
Ensnaring Bridge

Tarmogoyf CardKingdom $64.99 TCGPlayer $74.69
Ensnaring Bridge CardKingdom $44.99 TCGPlayer $33.01

For the first time since the COVID pandemic hit, our interest page looks like normal for a change! Many (huge) spikes from different sets and eras. I choose to see this as an omen of better times ahead!

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.

Feb 5, 2021

A strange and eventful week in the world of finance. Where you'd expect tons of cards to spike due to new brews, we mainly see a new hausse of reserved list cards being bought out. And also non-reserved list cards that happen to be MTG classics.
