Ah yes, the last week(s) of the year are upon us. Traditionally a time to cozy up with family around the Christmas tree, filling your belly with comfort food and wish everyone the best. And.. lists. At MTGStocks we love lists, we create new ones every day and this year we will share two extra special ones with you: the top 100 winners and top 100 losers of the year.
So instead of the regular Weekly Winners we will share and discuss the first of those two lists: the top 100 losers of 2018. Next week, Arjen has the top 100 winners for you.
Calculation method
The most important task in calculating these kinds of lists is the method you use to select, filter, include and exclude cards. Maybe you are missing some cards, or maybe you're surprised about the results. To avoid any confusion I will explain how we have calculated this list. It took us around five times to get it right. First of all, we excluded all the oldest sets with big prices and little trade. Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, the Dark were excluded from our list. The second important thing to note is that we used the prices of all cards in 2018 on the day of the release of the set. Prerelease prices are known to be inaccurate and some were even listed as $99.99 (or some other ridiculous) price at first. When we take the actual release date prices tend to be more accurate but still a tad high most of the time. You'll see that many of the top 100 losers are cards that were overhyped during the prerelease.
Also note that our 'jan 1st' column is either the price of the card on 01-01-2018, or the price of the card on the day of the release of the set, if that was a date later than 01-01-2018.

When Rivals of Ixalan was spoiled, Blood Sun was coined as one of the hottest cards in the set, reminding everyone of that classic card Blood Moon. Check out this article on Manaleak.com as a good example. But, in the end Blood Sun did not see any competitive play in Modern. And only sees a little bit of play in Legacy.
Glint-Sleeve Siphoner fell from grace this year as the set it was in rotated out of Standard. Before that, the card saw play in at least 15 different deck builds in standard. The energy-strategy was so good in standard that some other cards utilising energy had to be banned to restore balance to the meta.
Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle was the most overhyped card from Dominaria. In the days leading up to the release, several brewers and youtubers created videos about the card, detailing an insane 6 piece combo that would win you the game. Take this as an example:
Well, that did not take off. The card plunged in value after release (but spiking before it!) and the card is nowhere to be found in an competitive Standard deck currently around.
