Weekly Winners 2018 - 34

by Peter

All three winners are EDH related this week and it is a great pleasure to report that all three spiked because of organic demand and brewing, and not because of speculation. Those are the kinds of spikes we love to see! (and report on).

#1 Act of Authority $8.75 (+894%)

Act of Authority

This week's number one winner is Act of Authority, a card that spiked because of recent brews around the new commander Aminatou, the Fateshifter. People have been brewing with Act of Authority in Aminatou decks and with some degree of success, driving up the organic demand, followed by people buying the card in fear of missing out.

Act of Authority and Aminatou, the Fateshifter go well together because the planeswalker's -1 reads exile another target permanent you own. That means that you can exile your own Act of Authority when it has switched controllers, getting another enter the battlefield trigger and in your next upkeep, you get another trigger.

Check out this nice primer from Enral if you want to learn more on how the deck works, and what other cards are used in it.

#2 Cleansing Meditation $4 (+304.4%)

Cleansing Meditation

Cleansing Meditation spiked this week because of the popularity of Tuvasa the Sunlit. Maybe it seems a little counter-intuitive at first: Cleansing Meditation destroys all enchantments, all the while Tuvasa the Sunlit gets better with every enchantment that is on the battlefield, you might think our #2 winner is more of a strategy against Tuvasa, than a card that helps its strategy.

Things will become clear when you see the missing piece: Enchanted Evening. With that enchantment, all permanents become enchantments as well. That means that Cleansing Meditation destroys all permanents, and then allows you to put all your destroyed permanents back on the battlefield. This totally destroys your opponents' boardstate and will very probably result in his/her conceding the game.

Because Cleansing Meditation is from an older set with a small print run, expect it to stick to its $4 price tag. It might very well end up in the $8 to $10 range when it becomes a standard piece in Tuvasa decks.

#3 Conspiracy $12.49 (+177%)

Conspiracy

Ninjutsu is probably one of the most obscure (but fun) mechanics in Magic. The new commander Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow is a very unique card, since it is one of the very few cards that has a unique ability, only printed on one card: Commander Ninjustu. The commander allows you to win the game by letting all your opponents lose life when a Ninja does combat damage and Yuriko's trigger is stacked.

One problem though: only 14 Ninjas have ever been printed. And on top of that: 3 of them are printed in Unstable, so that leaves only 11 ninjas (including Yuriko herself). Since you can play only 1 copy of a card in EDH, that leaves you with very little to go on. And that's why Conspiracy spiked: it allows you to choose from an additional 9,000+ creatures that magically become Ninjas when you resolve Conspiracy.

Cheap Pickups

I know, $163 for a single copy of a card is not cheap in the sense that it still is a lot of money, but it is cheap considering it was a $500 dollar card in March last year. That saves you $1300+ when buying a playset! A Masters 25 printing of the card will only cost you $33. That printing is on an all time low this week as well.

This card sees play in a whopping 15 different decks in Modern and Legacy. That makes a $25 price tag pretty decent. A Masters 25 printing only costs you $20, which is very affordable for such a broadly played card.

For the first time since the COVID pandemic hit, our interest page looks like normal for a change! Many (huge) spikes from different sets and eras. I choose to see this as an omen of better times ahead!

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.

An interesting week, again driven by old card speculation and EDH. But we also have a special edition of Cheap Pickups, with a new way to look at cards that are (still) cheap pickups, but might go up later.

A strange and eventful week in the world of finance. Where you'd expect tons of cards to spike due to new brews, we mainly see a new hausse of reserved list cards being bought out. And also non-reserved list cards that happen to be MTG classics.
