Weekly Winners (4-2016)

The past week was -once again- a very interesting week finance-wise. So, once again, I present you the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight.

#1 Peregrine Drake +366.7% ($3.64)

Peregrine Drake

You gotta love Peregrine Drake. A virtually free 2/3 flying creatures, when you have at least 5 lands of course. It was an auto-add in any blue deck I played, back in the day you got Peregrine Drake from a Urza's Saga booster booster pack. Nice for kitchen table magic, but not good enough for the 366.7% increase this week, and the $3.64 price tag.

Peregrine Drake is following the footsteps of Great Whale and Palinchron, not to mention Cloud of Faeries, a card recently banned from Pauper. Being able to untap land is great, especially when you can build a combo deck around it. In the case of Peregrine Drake, the newly printed Eldrazi Displacer is a likely candidate. You can go infinite with it. You exile Peregrine Drake for 2C, and return it to play, and you may untap five lands, you can do it over and over again, while getting 2 mana for each time you do it.

Since Peregrine Drake is not legal in Modern and the combo is not good enough for Legacy and Vintage, the spike of this card is driven by casual and EDH players mostly. But, also note that Peregrine Drake was a card that was hard to get. Most webstores did not have a huge stock to begin with, making the card an easy target for buyouts. But it seems like this spike was driven by a normal, healthy demand.

#2 Descendants' Path +160 ($3.77)

Descendants' Path

Descendants' Path gained a lot of value this week, and for a good reason. Aside from the beautiful artwork, Descendants' Path works well with Eldrazis. Just imagine what happens when say, Kozilek, the Great Distortion or Emrakul, the Aeons Torn just happen to be on top of your library, with a Descendants' Path in play. And please note that the card says 'you may cast', so you will sneak it into play, and still get to stack the 'whenever you cast'-ability.

No wonder people start to brew with this. 2G is easy to cough up in Modern, and even in Legacy. Not to mention in EDH or kitchen table magic. At this moment, the card is completely sold out. Expect this card to gain some more value.

#3 Worship +152.8% ($3.57)

Worship

Worship is another one of those cards that brings back memories from Urza's Saga era kitchen table magic. Why play disenchant when you can play a cool angel instead. Worship, that's why. A hard lesson learned indeed. Enough flashbacks, back to 2016. The year even Marty McFly's future self would call the future.

Today, Worship sees fringe play in Modern sideboards. Check out the four recent Zoo decks that feature Worship. I've also seen some modern brews with the card, in an attempt to create a successor to the lantern-control deck. Aside from that, Worship is still great in EDH and Casual magic.

Just like last week, the Commander: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt spoilers are the main factor of influence on the markets this week. There are enough cards spoiled for the brewing to commence and we expect a lot more movement in the coming weeks!

Catalyst Stone Daybreak Ranger Oboro, Palace in the Clouds

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.
