Weekly Winners 2021 - 17

Just like last week we see cards that go up, up, and up because of Commander. All the cards have something to do with new cards in both Strixhaven and Commander 2021. Always happy to see when people are inspired to build new decks and new ideas when new cards are printed.

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

#1 Scrap Mastery $13.94 (+760%)

Scrap Mastery

When I saw Daretti, Scrap Savant I immediately liked the card. Planeswalker with a built-in Faithless Looting (ok, not exactly, but you know what I mean), along with a built-in Goblin Welder effect? Sign me up! When it was released in Commander 2014 it was the commander of one of the pre-cons. In that pre-con was another card: Scrap Mastery. To me the effect of this card seemed powerful if you were able to fill your graveyard. It can immediately win you the game if you manage to get your most powerful artifacts in your graveyard. One of the problems is that it's a symmetrical effect, and thus your opponents can benefit from it as well. However, the price has always stayed below $2, and perhaps for good reason.

Yet all of the sudden it shoots up to over $10. It seems the sorcery has found its home in Osgir, the Reconstructor or Alibou, Ancient Witness. Commander decks. Both commanders obviously revolve around the artifacts-matter theme. With Osgir's ability you can sacrifice your artifacts to give a creature +2/+0, swing in, and then return your entire board with Scrap Mastery. With Alibou, Ancient Witness it seems good to get your powerful big artifact creatures back to the battlefield with haste to swing in.

As with most of these big spikes, I don't see this price sticking. When the hype is over, or it becomes reprinted, it will come down again.

Scrap Mastery CardKingdom $2.79 TCGPlayer $13.94
Scrap Mastery CardKingdom $2.79 TCGPlayer $12.73
Osgir, the Reconstructor CardKingdom $0.79 TCGPlayer $3.25
Alibou, Ancient Witness CardKingdom $0.99 TCGPlayer $1.58

#2 Beacon of Creation $27.99 (+303%)

Beacon of Creation

This green sorcery has slowly been uptrending for the past few weeks, and has now jumped to almost $30, and fell back to $28. For you get X 1/1 green Insect creature tokens, where X is the number of Forests you control. Afterwards you can shuffle Beacon of Creation back into your library. Ramping is in Commander, and especially in green decks, a very common strategy, meaning that after a couple of turns you probably have a bunch of lands (preferably forests) in play.

Because of new cards in Commander 2021 and Strixhaven: School of Mages. The card is a popular include for people who want to upgrade their Commander 2021 Witherbloom Witchcraft or Quantum Quantrix precons. But we also see this card included in Commander decks with new commanders like Ruxa, Patient Professor, Blex, Vexing Pest and Esix, Fractal Bloom.

Blex, Vexing Pest CardKingdom $3.49 TCGPlayer $2.75
Ruxa, Patient Professor CardKingdom $1.99 TCGPlayer $2.97
Esix, Fractal Bloom CardKingdom $5.99 TCGPlayer $9.75
Beacon of Creation CardKingdom $9.99 TCGPlayer $27.99

#3 Overmaster $39.46 (+132%)

Overmaster

Overmaster was first brought to my attention back in 2012 when it was included as sideboard card in Legacy OmniTell decks. It was included to have a higher chance to resolve your Show and Tell and put Omniscience onto the battlefield. Because of this, it went up a few dollars, but stayed below $7 and dwindled back to $2 over the years.

This week see it becoming almost $40, and that mostly has to do with again Commander demand that's being driven by Commander 2021 and Strixhaven: School of Mages. Overmaster sees play in Veyran, Voice of Duality and Rionya, Fire Dancer. Especially the first one of those is the culprit, since it was played on Game Knights (around 18:29).

Rionya, Fire Dancer CardKingdom $1.29 TCGPlayer $2.49
Veyran, Voice of Duality CardKingdom $14.99
Overmaster CardKingdom $14.99 TCGPlayer $39.46

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
