Weekly Winners 2021 - 14

This week we have some movement because of a variety of reasons, which are always the most fun weeks. We see some casual play demand and tournament play demand. Of course these weeks are good to keep an eye on price moments because of Strixhaven: School of Mages and Commander 2021 spoilers. This week we will also do a Cheap Pickups: Time Spiral: Remastered Edition instead of the regular one.

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

#1 Tempt with Reflections $14.94 (+579%)

Tempt with Reflections

I hate to admit this: but I have no idea on why this card went up as much as it did. So I hope the readers can point me in the right direction on either the Reddit thread or on Twitter. I will try to speculate a bit on why it may have gone up, but will edit the article if someone can give me a better reason.

First of what struck me is that this is a super fun political card. Not only can you give yourself a copy of a creature you control, but your opponents can choose to get a copy as well, but for each opponent that decides to do so, you will get an additional copy of that creature as well. My second thought is that it may be, once again, because of Orvar, the All-Form. The past few weeks we have seen several cards going up because of Orvar, and there is obviously a strong copy theme going on.

We see the card being played in commander decks with Keiga, the Tide Star, Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer, and Sakashima the Impostor as commander. Tempt with Reflections definitely fits the theme of these commanders. There also is some weird synergy/combo with Dualcaster Mage where the game is locked with "infinite" mages, until you target a different creature to copy and/or your opponents decide they no longer want to get mages.

Edit: As multiple people have pointed out, Tempt with Reflections may have simply jumped for the same reason as our #2 winner: Adrix and Nev, Twincasters. This had crossed my mind as well, but I figured there would be better copy effects that did not jump in price. However, when you cast Tempt with Reflections with Adrix and Nev, Twincasters in play you get two copies of the creature you targeted, plus an additional two copies for each opponent that also wants a copy.

#2 Fable of Wolf and Owl $24.87 (+485%)

Fable of Wolf and Owl

An enchantment that sees some inclusion in commander decks that revolve around tokens. It doesn't see that much play according to EDHRec, but it spiked with slightly over 485% this week. It isn't all that surprising that, seeing as Strixhaven: School of Mages has fully been spoiled and Commander 2021 spoilers are in full swing, that it has something to do with a new card.

This time the spike seems related to the printing of new Quandrix commander Adrix and Nev, Twincasters. The synergy isn't hard to spot. Adrix and Nev says that when a token would be created under your control, you get twice that many tokens instead. Since Fable of Wolf and Owl makes tokens for every or spell you cast, you get twice that many tokens. That's basically it!

I do not think this card is worth $25, but since it is a card from Eventide it does mean there are relatively only a few copies of it on the market. Scarcity seems to be a driving factor behind this price rather than real demand. The card was however mentioned by Heroes and Legends MTG on YouTube which may be a (small) factor as well.

#3 Kaya's Guile $7.95 (+167%)

Kaya's Guile

Another card spiking because of spoilers season?! Doesn't look like it! Kaya's Guile has found its way into several Modern decks, and especially as a 4-off (2 mainboard, 2 sideboard) in Esper Control and is also found in 5 color Mizzet. Since the card is only and you have four modes which you can choose two from (or even all of them when paying the Entwine cost) makes it a very versatile card that can net you an advantages throughout all stages of the match.

The card only has one printing in Modern Horizons and really needs a reprint before the price will come down. The supply of MH1 is getting low, and demand is increasing. Modern Horizons was released almost two years ago.

Cheap Pickups: Time Spiral Remastered Edition

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

True-Name Nemesis $9.98
True-Name Nemesis

This is not the cheapest version of the card, but it's less than a dollar difference from the Battlebond print. The card had a presale price of around $20, and if I had to get a playset now, I would definitely pick the Time Spiral: Remastered version.

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker $14.81
Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker

Seems to be the cheapest version of Kiki-Jiki and I can't really explain why. Would it be possible that the old frame isn't as popular as people thought it would be?

Young Pyromancer $5.00
Young Pyromancer

You can pick up the Jumpstart edition for only $0.55, but Young Pyromancer was pre-selling for about $15. For a staple that sees play in Legacy, Vintage, Modern, and Historic I don't think $5 is that crazy of a deal if you like the old frame.
