Weekly Winners 2021 - 11

Another week and another week of spikes, and of course a lot of old cards going up. This week we'll try to focus on the more interesting cards that saw movement this week. Meaning we're going to talk Sliver. Yes! Slivers! A good old casual favorite.

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

#1 Sliver Hive $29.89 (+84%)

Sliver Hive

Ah, slivers! A good old casual favorite! Play a bunch of them and they all will buff each other. Sliver Hive was printed in Magic 2015 (M15) and that is already almost 7 years ago. Every sliver deck benefits from this land, and is an auto-include. With the reprint of slivers in Time Spiral: Remastered we see a new boost of the love for these "Starship Trooper"-esque creatures.

A problem with slivers is that people also want to play the lords, but some of them are simply out of reach because of the high price they carry. With Sliver Queen being on the Reserved List and nearing the $600 price tag, it is simply out of reach for most casual players. It even spiked this week with over 50%! But with the reprint of Sliver Legion this may become a lord that is once again affordable. The original print in Future Sight was around $150 at its highpoint, but the reprint can now be bought for $40 and is even slowly trending down.

That being said, we do see that Sliver Hivelord is trending up. It wasn't reprinted and being a sliver "lord" it may become more popular. The normal printing of the card sees a small uptick, but the foil version has spiked to $250. We also saw Synapse Sliver, Syphon Sliver, and The First Sliver going up. So if you want to get your slivers, you may want to jump on it before these prices go up more.

#2 Auriok Champion $63.45 (+59%)

Auriok Champion

This Human Cleric has been showing some interesting price movements over the past few weeks. It also spiked earlier this month, but came down quickly after that, and went up again to over $60. Interestingly the Fifth Dawn print still is below $50. Usually it feels like the older prints are more expensive, but mainly people enjoy the new art more than the old one. Especially the foils made a huge jump.

Auriok Champion sees quite some play in Modern in multiple archetypes like Heliod Combo, Death and Taxes, and Boros Hammer. The card is very strong against, obviously, black and red decks that simply have a very hard time removing it. Auriok Champion is printed in only two sets, the first one being Fifth Dawn that was released almost 17 years ago, and in Iconic Masters that people speculate is under-opened. It seems like this card is the victim of the traditional supply and demand paradigm. Relatively few copies, and a lot of people trying to play it.

With countries around the world vaccinating their population against COVID-19, people think that normal paper play may start to pick up again and its time to get their decks ready for when that happens. But even if that's not the case there are plenty of webcam leagues that people are willing to play in.

#3 Allosaurus Shepherd $223.35 (+74%)

Allosaurus Shepherd

This price is absolutely bonkers and definitely not worth it. Being printed only in Jumpstart and at Mythic, makes that there are only a few copies. It sees some commander play, but is mainly played in Legacy Elves as a 4-off. Making all spells in your deck uncounterable in a format where blue is one of the most prominent colors is gas. But that's not it, Allosaurus Shepherd has a built-in win-condition as well. If you have a few elves, you can pump them up to 5/5s.

The raw powerlevel of this card along with the scarcity kind of warrants the price at this point, but this is not a sustainable situation. The card is bound to get a reprint at some point. Even though we don't see Allosaurus Shepherd show up that much on EDHRec, Elves are a popular right now because of the new ones printed in Kaldheim.

We do see more cards from Jumpstart going up, and especially the mythics. One of the other popular commander examples is Tinybones, Trinket Thief going up. Remember that Jumpstart has a relatively low supply. Rudy, from Alpha Investments, did a video about the Jumpstart supply as well.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
