Weekly Winners 2023 - 22

Bit of a slow week finance-wise. With the previews from The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth going on it seems like people are waiting for the new combo to arrive. Nevertheless we found some fun cards to talk about.

Corey put out a new article in his Modern Times series. The surge in product saturation since Covid-19 has shifted the card games market, like Pioneer and Pauper, resulting in lower expected values for new sets and consumers focusing more on bonus sheets and variant inserts instead of set cards.

#1 Historian's Boon FOIL $12.96 (+1,047%)

Here's a winner that didn't really show up in the regular interests, but did show up in the foil interests. The shiny version of this card shot up last week with 1,047% from $1.13 to $13. But when we look at the chart of the regular version we also definitely see some movement. Historian's Boon is a somewhat newer card from Commander: Dominaria United and cares about enchantments entering the battlefield. However, the reason for the spike seems to be because of its second ability where you are rewarded with a 4/4 Angel when the final chapter of a Saga triggers.

It was no secret that Lord of the Rings would contain Sagas, since Tom Bombadil was revealed early. And now with preview season of this set going, we see that indeed Sagas are prominent. What's interesting is that the foil price of the regular print shot up, but the foil price of the extended art is severly lagging behind. This really feels like speculation rather than organic demand.

#2 Doric, Nature's Warden $41.50 (+63%)

One character from the Honor Among Thieves Secret Lair has taken the center stage in recent weeks. Doric, Nature's Warden has been gathering quite the fanbase. Her newfound popularity is easily noticed by the rising number of players opting to use her as their commander. The consensus is that the gaming experience Doric brings to the table is not just exciting, but also refreshingly unique.

The reason for this sudden surge in Doric's popularity is likely tied to her frequent appearance in Commander content, where her special abilities and unique playing style have caught the attention of many players. This attention, however, isn't without merit. Doric brings a special flavour to the game. With her, players can guide their gameplay into new, exciting areas.

In terms of cost, Doric's increase in popularity has had a notable impact. Her price has shot up quite significantly over a short period of time. At the beginning of May, a Doric card could be picked up for a modest $10. However, by the end of the month her price had more than doubled to $21. Now you have to pay a whopping $41 to get your hands on a copy.

#3 All Will Be One $17.98 (+20%)

We talked about this card before in previous Weekly Winners. At the end of January we discussed this card for its combo with Quest for Pure Flame and in the beginning of February we talked about the combo with War Elemental.

In March of the Machine: The Aftermath another card was printed that works well with All Will Be One, and that card is Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin. This combo is even Standard legal! That we have multiple combos with the enchantment, and that new cards will also be able to combo with it, proves that it will most likely be a popular card for the forseeable future. And unless it's reprinted it will most likely only go up.

When looking at EDHREC we see that the card appears in 3% of all possible decks. It's especially prevalent in decks around Migloz, Maze Crusher and The Red Terror. But this card will most likely be a staple in any kind of deck that can support it in its color identity and cares about counters being placed on permanents. Seeing as that is a very broad field, and almost every set will have some cards that place counters, it seems to me that this card will always get more additional support sooner or later.
