Weekly Winners 2023 - 04

by Arjen

Two out of three of our winners are moving because of Phyrexia: All Will Be One, which is looking like a very powerful set. And the other is moving due to my favorite format: Legacy. Come and find out what cards have been moving last week.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight! Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Discord and Reddit.

Articles

We're reaching a point where we can more steadily get an awesome stream of written content going here on MTGStocks. Last week Harvey published a new Over and Under where he talked about Mindbreak Trap and Gaea's Cradle. And Corey's second installment of Modern Times was also posted, where he looked at the financial ramifications of two potential unbannings.

We're looking for a few more writers to round out our written content. Currently we're interested in writers that specialize in Legacy, Vintage, and/or Commander staples and their financial impact. If you think you got what it takes and love Magic as much as we do, head on over to our Write for Us form and drop us a message.

If you want to receive an e-mail in your inbox when a new article is published you can enable it in your e-mail preferences and/or join the Discord.

Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Quest for Pure Flame $2.79 (+549%)

Quest for Pure Flame

Let's start this week's Winners with an uncommon from Zendikar. This card is part of the "Quest" cycle, enchantments which get a quest counter based on a triggered ability and become "active" when you reach a certain number of counters. In this case you add a quest counter whenever you deal damage to an opponent. You can then remove four of those quest counters and sacrifice it to deal double damage this turn.

When an older card spikes out of nowhere, it's frequently because of an interaction with a newly previewed card. In this case, the card is All Will Be One from Phyrexia: All Will Be One, which was revealed a few days ago. This is a red Mythic enchantment where you get to deal damage to an opponent, creature, or planeswalker equal to the number of counters you place on a permanent or player.

With this combo, you get to go infinite and (potentially) kill all your opponents. When you have both enchantments in play, you need a source to damage one of your opponents. Once you do, you get to put a counter on Quest for Pure Flame. This will trigger All Will Be One to do one damage to an opponent, which in turn will trigger Quest for Pure Flame again. This is an infinite loop, and as long as your opponents don't have anything like Leyline of Sanctity, you get to win on the spot.

Which brings us to a sneaky extra winner this week: The Red Terror. This red rare creature from Universes Beyond: Warhammer 40,000 can also do infinite damage with All Will Be One. The Red Terror went up to $4.90 which is a 476% increase.

#2 Mawloc $9.99 (+87%)

Mawloc

Another card from Universes Beyond: Warhammer 40,000, this Tyranid creature can fight another creature when it comes into play, and exiles it when it dies. If you put at least 5 mana into you also get to draw a card. These 40K cards are popping up in the interests quite often since the set has a pretty high power level, and people are finding ways to use these cards in their decks.

In this case, Legacy is driving the price. It's popping up in Food Chain, Maverick, and Naya Stompy decks. Currently Legacy is especially hot on MTGO where the most brewing occurs. However, Mawloc and the other cards from 40K have not yet been added on MTGO. This is scheduled to happen somewhere in Q1 or Q2 of this year, and when that happens the real brewing with it will begin. When this card is putting up results then, the price will most likely increase even more.

When 40K gets added to MTGO, there are more cards that may then follow a similar trajectory. I think the most likely cards are Poxwalkers, Triumph of Saint Katherine, and Chaos Defiler.

#3 Atraxa, Praetors' Voice $58.42 (+61%)

Atraxa, Praetors' Voice

Unless you're new to Commander, you've seen Atraxa, Praetors' Voice many times. It's ranked on EDHREC as the most popular commander in the past 2 years. With Phyrexia: All Will Be One being previewed, we're seeing more and more cards popping up that work well with Atraxa.

Atraxa is a powerful 4/4 legendary creature that makes you Proliferate at your end step. When you Proliferate you get to add a counter of any kind to every permanent or player that already has that type of counter on it. Phyrexia: All Will Be One has a lot of support for poison counters with the new Toxic ability, but there are also cards that simply give all your opponents a poison counter, like Prologue to Phyresis. When you play these cards, along with other poison counter and Proliferate cards, Atraxa gives you a pretty good strategy. Phyrexia: All Will Be One also introduces Oil counters, which you can also Proliferate with Atraxa.

Also, there's a new Atraxa in town, in the form of Atraxa, Grand Unifier. But this version cares about card types instead of counters.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Canoptek Spyder $3.49 - Moving up!
