Weekly Winners 2022 - 35

Dominaria United will be officially released in one week from now, but is already available on Magic Arena. This means the brewing can really commence and the meta to slowly solve itself. This week we see most price fluctuations being because of new Dominaria United cards, and mostly because of Commander play. Interesting to see how the prices will settle.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

Important Weekly Winners update

I am proud to say that for over the past 100 weeks we have never missed publishing a Weekly Winners for you every Friday, and I definitely hope I can keep this up for the foreseeable future. However, next week I will be taking my family to the United States and drive around in an RV for a month in the midwest. As some of you know, I am from the Netherlands, so this is quite a trip for us. However, I am not sure how much time I'll have there and also not entirely sure how dodgy my internet will be. This means that the Weekly Winners may be a day early, or a day later than usual. Or worse case, I may have to skip a week.

I hope you understand this, but I can assure you that once I return I can guarantee articles again.

#1 Faerie Noble $3.61 (+63%)

Faerie Noble

This card is moving up and has not entered the top 10 of most expensive cards from Homelands. It won't take long before this set will be actually worth something! For you get a Faerie that gives +0/+1 to other faeries, with the possibility to give other faeries +1/+0 until end of turn. So you could consider this a faerie lord, but not quite entirely.

I can already see you wondering what makes this card special and why people would want to play it. It is not a particular good card, but remember that in Commander that does will not necesarily be a restriction for cards being played. The fact that this creature is a faerie is good enough here, because in Dominaria United a new Legendary Simic faerie was printed in Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief. This new faerie rogue may spark some new interest in the tribal.

Along with Faerie Noble we have another card that may have gone up because of the same reason. That card is Willow Priestess, another rare from Homelands and the 3rd most expensive card in the set!

Willow Priestess

However, while this may seem like a somewhat legitimate reason for these cards to spike, do note that both of them are on the Reserved List, and I mostly address these price increases to speculation rather than actual demand.

#2 Astral Dragon $5.66 (+25%)

Astral Dragon

This is a rare from the Draconic Dissent from Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate. This blue dragon costs and when it enters the battlefield, you get to create two tokens that are copies of a noncreature permanent. Those tokens will be 3/3 creatures with flying as well.

This card already was popular in commander in Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm decks for example, since in the recent sets we have had quite some support for dragons in general. Now with Dominaria United and Commander: Dominaria United out we see there are a bunch more cards to give dragons even more toys. Some of the more notable new cards are The Elder Dragon War, Rith, Liberated Primeval, Rivaz of the Claw, and Two-Headed Hellkite. But as you can see these cards don't include in their card identity, so you would need to find a commander that supports blue as well. However, we also see Sivitri, Dragon Master (Foil Etched) printed in the Commander: Dominaria United set, which both supports dragons and already has the correct identity to play Astral Dragon in. I feel this last card may the most driving factor from the recent Dominaria sets.

Talking about dragons, this week we also see Hellkite Tyrant showing up in the interests, and this one does fit well in the color identity of the other cards mentioned earlier. This card is already known as a good dragon, and especially in commander you can definitely get some sweet artifacts from your opponents, which can even make you win the game. Also with Treasure Tokens being all around it has become so much easier to have 20 artifacts.

#3 Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient $27.98 (+74%)

Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient

Klauth has shot up this week, and especially the foil version from Commander: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. This dragon was already pretty popular to begin with. For you get a 4/4 flying haste dragon with whenever Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient attacks, add X mana in any combination of colors, where X is the total power of attacking creatures. Spend this mana only to cast spells. Until end of turn, you donโ€™t lose this mana as steps and phases end.

And I know we already discussed dragons in our previous winner, and those cards are indeed probably part of the reason why Klauth went up as well. More dragons make this card go up, because it is pretty good. However, we do see some extra cards from Dominaria United that may have given Klauth the extra little push. First we have Jodah, the Unifier. Attacking with Klauth and then using that mana to cast extra Legendary creatures seems kinda good. Also since dragon decks often have a lot of Legendary creatures, Jodah gives them all some extra power. Not that dragon necessarily need that.

The second card is not from the main Dominaria set, but from the Commander set. Jared Carthalion is found as the commander of the Painbow deck. Being all five colors works well for dragon decks, since they exist in all colors. And there are also plenty of dragons that are all colors. Jared can boost the power of dragons a bit, and its ultimate can bounce a dragon, generating Treasure tokens, that may enable you to replay it.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
