Weekly Winners 2022 - 33

Spoiler season Dominaria United has officially started yesterday, but today we do not see a lot of effect on it yet on prices. I do expect this to happen the upcoming week though. Along with Dominaria United Wizards has laid out the product they intend to release the upcoming months, so there are plenty of new cards to come. This week we have a great mix of Legacy, Modern, and Commander in the Weekly Winners, which are my favorite weeks to write.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

#1 Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes $8.19 (+66%)

Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes

This is an interesting one actually, because I never expected this card to show up in Legacy to be honest, but that is exactly what happened. It seems to be sometimes showing up in Selesnya Depths decks where there is one copy in the mainboard and another one in the sideboard. But when we take a closer look at the card there definitely is some powerful potential.

This card definitely is not unbeatable, but when it comes down you can immediately create a 4/4 hasty trampling hamster. The turn after you can fling the hamster at your opponent, dealing 4 damage and drawing four cards, and in the right deck like Depths you can potentially do this on turn 3. Or you could fling Boo immediately on turn 2 where you will be dealing 1 damage and drawing a card. Never thought I would write an article about sacrificing hamsters and throwing them at someone, but here we are...

But now imagine just for a second that we are not throwing hamsters, but something bigger. Let's say... a 20/20 Marit Lage. Sacrificing it, dealing 20 damage to your opponent, and it not being counterable (except with cards like Stifle), seems pretty good. Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes may just be threatening enough. It could potentially close a game by attacking with a larger and larger hamster that we could fling for lethal later, or just keep Boo on blocking duty. Or we could use it as card advantage. Or potentially just end the game by throwing 20 damage with our black avatar token. Or fling a really big Knight of the Reliquary.

#2 Tomb of Urami $2.91 (+65%)

Tomb of Urami

This rare from Saviors of Kamigawa went up with 65%, making it only $1.15 more expensive than it used to be, but percentage wise that's still a big leap for a card that is this cheap. Tomb of Urami is a Legendary Land with two abilities:

: Add . Tomb of Urami deals 1 damage to you if you don't control an Ogre.

, , Sacrifice all lands you control: Create a legendary 5/5 black Demon Spirit creature token with flying named Urami.

I can imagine that this card never really made waves. Paying 4 mana and sacrificing your lands to get a single 5/5 Demon Spirit does not seem like an amazing deal. And still it goes up all of the sudden. This usually means someone found a way to abuse the abilities and make it more worthwhile. Now this seems to be exactly what has happened. Aspiringspike has included this card as one-off in his Modern Rakdos Sacrifice deck saying it is has a low opportunity cost to include and can do some insane stuff with Mayhem Devil on the battlefield.

Mayhem Devil reads Whenever a player sacrifices a permanent, Mayhem Devil deals 1 damage to any target.. So if you activate Tomb of Urami with Mayhem Devil on the battlefield (or maybe multiple copies even), you immediately get to deal a bunch of damage. This may be game ending on the spot. This combo together has a low cost to include, and a potential high reward.

#3 Fierce Guardianship $98.99 (+58%)

Fierce Guardianship

Wow! This rare from Commander 2020 is almost $100 nowadays. And that's probably not too odd, since it only has one printing and it a potentially free counterspell. Free counterspells have been heavily debated in formats since they can really warp a format. Look at Mental Misstep for instance that really destroyed the Legacy meta before it was banned. But also cards like Daze, Force of Negation, or Force of Will. This latter one will be reprinted in Dominaria Remastered by the way!

It can basically be found in any commander deck that plays blue and is all over the place. Notably it saw play during the $100.000 match of Post Malone on Whatnot in a Koma, Cosmos Serpent deck. That definitely could have focussed some more eyes on this card and driving the price up a little bit more

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Flooded Grove $3.99 - Moving up!
