Weekly Winners 2020 - 10

by Peter

The trends we saw last week are continuing into this week. Our second winner is one of the best examples of demand-driven price increases there are and worth a good look.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

#1 Doomsday $17.98 (+115.07%)

Doomsday

It does not happen often that the same card is our #1 winner two weeks in a row. Well, this week it happened. We are talking about Doomsday of course. This week, its 6th edition printing spiked hard, after its original printing did the same thing last week.

Fot those of you who have missed it. The reason that Doomsday spikes is not because of Legacy. No, it is the sheer popularity of Thassa's Oracle that's causing the spike. With Thassa's Oracle, you can win the game by drawing the remainder of your library. And since Doomsday shrinks your deck size to 5 cards, that's a great help in an EDH deck with a Doomsday strategy.

Doomsday's newest printing (from Masters 25) is currently $10.98 after a small spike. That seems a fair price for the card currently, but it could go up some more. Masters 25 does not have a huge print run, and the art is very cool. Also it is black bordered. These are characteristics that could possibly put it close to par with the 6th edition printing. A $6 gap is quite big between those two printings.

Doomsday CardKingdom $9.99 TCGPlayer $17.98

#2 Gideon of the Trials $23.63 (+46.86%)

Gideon of the Trials

Always be extra attentive when valuing planeswalkers. They tend to be powerful and popular pieces in many constructive decks. Not all of them, and because many have been printed over the past years it is easy to lose track of them.

Gideon of the Trials has grown out to be a Pioneer staple with a #29 place on in the list with most played cards in the format. It sees play in a whopping 16 different decks. Check out the top three decks below. The price increase of Gideon of the Trials is demand driven and organic. Actually, the price development of this card is a textbook example of cards that gain popularity in a format and increase in price due to popular demand. No huge spikes, but a steep increase in price over several weeks.

#3 Orim's Chant $14.49 (+90.16%)

Orim's Chant

Just like Silence last week, Orim's Chant made the weekly winners this week. The cards are functionally almost the same and take the same slot in Legacy decks.

With Orim's Chant, you can bait your opponents' counterspells. By casting it, you force your opponent to either counter it and lose a valuable spell, or they let it resolve, rendering all other spells you play uncounterable (by spells). Be aware of that last little tad of info, though. I once witnessed a combo player losing the game because he forgot that his opponent had a Cursecatcher in play after resolving a Orim's Chant. His opponent could not play counterspells, but he could still sacrifice his Cursecatcher.

Orim's Chant sees play in Underworld Breach Legacy. Check out example decklists below.

#4 Flash $4.15 (+82%)

Flash

This card went up 82%, and even though that's barely a $2 difference, let's talk a bit about this card. Does this card see play in Modern? No, not legal. Legacy then? Nope. Banned. Vintage? Barely. Then it must be EDH, right? Well, you would be half correct.

Flash is a combo piece together with Protean Hulk, where these two can end the game on the spot. There are multiple lines that can get you the win. One example would be if you searched for Nomads en-Kor, Cephalid Illusionist, and Thassa's Oracle. When those creatures enter the battlefield, you put Thassa's Oracle trigger on the stack, and then target your Cephalid Illusionist as many times as needed with Nomads en-Kor, milling your library and winning with the trigger.

We actually only see this combo in cEDH at the moment. The card has been mentioned on several occasions that it may be banned in EDH, but since the combo doesn't seem to see a lot of play in casual EDH, it remains legal for now. However, the future of this card is really uncertain. We suspect that Flash is merely going up due to speculation.

#5 Indomitable Creativity $2.99 (+57%)

Indomitable Creativity

Search your bulk rares (mythics?) boxes, it's time to search for Indomitable Creativity since you can get a few dollars for it. The reason for this is the new Modern "Creative Mining" deck that we see popping up online. The win condition is simple: cheat a big spaghetti monster into play. Of course I'm talking about Emrakul, the Aeons Torn.

So how does this deck work? You try to get Dwarven Mine onto the battlefield, create a 1/1 token and then cast either Indomitable Creativity or Polymorph on it. You start flipping your deck until you find a 15/15 flying annihilating tentacle monster and put it into the battlefield. When successful, this will usually end the game pretty quickly

If you have Teferi, Time Raveler on the battlefield you can make sure your opponent can't interact with you while you find Emrakul, but more importantly, you can do this all at instant speed. You can use a fetchland to find Dwarven Mine, since it's a mountain, at the end of your opponent's turn and play either Indomitable Creativity or Polymorph at instant speed.

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.
