Weekly Winners 2022 - 29

Just like last week we see movement because of the very same Command Zone video that impacted prices last week. The last winner is a reserved list card, but because of the large and more complex textbox I thought it would be fun to discuss it anyway. Besides these cards it has been a slow week, but it seems like some more exciting times are ahead of us because Wizards may already start spoiling cards from Dominaria United.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

#1 Seedtime $18.54 (+86%)

Seedtime

This rare card from Judgment is a rather interesting one. As you may know usually "take another turn" cards are pretty popular usually, and taking an extra turn for only seems pretty good. However there is catch! Actually, there are two! Even though Seedtime is an instant you still can only play it during your turn. But even more restrictive is the other line of text saying you can only take an extra turn if an opponent cast a blue spell this turn. So what do you need to make this be valuable? Have an opponent who plays blue. In multiplayer EDH games changes are high that at least someone will play blue, and doing stuff in other people's turn often comes with playing blue. If you get your spell countered, you could respond with Seedtime getting an extra turn.

Like I mentioned, this is a card from an older set and has never been reprinted since, even though it isn't on the reserved list. But this does drive the price a little bit since the supply is relatively low. This card has already spiked back in 2018 and has only gone up ever since. But why is it spiking again? Well, we see the same thing actually as some cards in last week's Weekly Winners. It was discussed in the Command Zone Most Obscure & Underrated cards video around the 44min mark.

#2 Holistic Wisdom $4.98 (+82%)

Holistic Wisdom

Well, look at that! Another old rare, and this time from Odyssey! For 3 mana it is an enchantment that has a single ability: , Exile a card from your hand: Return target card from your graveyard to your hand if it shares a card type with the card exiled this way. This is a way to get cards from your graveyard back to your hand by exiling cards you don't need at that particular time and can be useful in the mid- or late-game to get your major threats back. Since 2020 this card was already creeping up steadily but went up from around $3 to $4.80 it is now.

It does not see a lot of commander play according to EDHRec, and personally I think there may be beter ways to recur your cards. It still went up because... you got it... the Command Zone video we discussed in our #1 winner where it is discussed around the 26min mark. For people who want to make a buck with Magic cards it seems that you can potentially just follow the Command Zone on YouTube, make sure you get a notification when it goes online, quickly skim the title and if its something like "stuff you should play", quickly skim over the cards they are discussing and buy them. For everything else, you of course should look at (shameless self-plug) MTGStocks Premium.

#3 Soul Echo $4.80 (+48%)

Soul Echo

Decided to talk about this card because I wasn't really aware of it. It is a rare card from Mirage and is on the reserved list. As you know these prices are easy to manipulate because of a relatively low supply which will never increase. It is one of these old cards with a weird ability and a bunch of text on it. So let's break it down a little bit. It costs , and Soul Echo will enter the battlefield with X echo counters on it.

Further more, you don't lose the game for having 0 or less life. But, at the beginning of your upkeep you have to sacrifice Soul Echo if there are no echo counters on it anymore. But if there are echo counters on it, then a target opponent may decide that for each 1 damage that would be dealt to you until your next upkeep, you have to remove an echo counter from Soul Echo instead.

Not being able to lose the game for having 0 or less life is interesting, since it usually opens doors to combos. One of the most easy cards to combo with probably is Ad Nauseam with which you can basically draw your library and end up at minus a-bunch of life. Or you could have a card onto the battlefield to put you at 0 life (for example something like Wall of Blood) and then use a life-switching ability like Repay In Kind or Soul Conduit.

Even though these combos exist, Soul Echo definitely isn't the only enabler for this. Cards like Phyrexian Unlife exist that could also fulfill this role. In the end I do think the spike of Soul Echo is merely a result of a targeted buyout of another reserved list card, and it is not driven by actual demand.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Subtlety $9.25 - Moving up!
Subtlety

Subtlety has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Trends feature as a card that has started a strong uptrend.

Tarmogoyf $18.16 - Trending down

Would not buy it now, because it seems like it is still going down hard, but if you really want this card you may as well get it for this price.

Celestial Colonnade $3.29 - Slowly trending down
