Weekly Winners 2022 - 25

Commander is driving the prices again, and just like last week we see a lot of cards that you will find in Dragon decks move. Meanwhile the Double Masters 2022 spoilers are coming in and we have seen quite some promising reprints and we do see prices going down for some of these.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

#1 Dragonborn Champion $9.00 (+500%)

 

This Dragon Warrior from Commander: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms has been shooting up the past week and could be bought for under a dollar a few weeks ago. It has been shooting up because of Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate where it has received a lot of new cards in which it slots nicely. Dragonborn Champion can be found in the Draconic Rage commander deck. For 4 mana you will get a 5/3 Dragon Warrior with Trample. It has an extra ability stating that whenever a source you control deals 5 or more damage to a player, draw a card. Since dragons tend to be big creatures it is not really that difficult to deal 5 damage and generate some card advantage.

Dragonborn Champion can be added to, for example, The Ur-Dragon or Tiamat decks that are already popular. It also fits pretty nicely in Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients (Extended Art) decks, a relatively new commander found in Commander: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. There is also the new commander Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm, one that we also discussed last week in our Weekly Winners.

I am not sure this card currently warrants a $9 price tag and see it coming down a bit. But I am however a bit surprised this card wasn't worth more to begin with.

 

#2 Dragon Tempest $10.45 (+67%)

 

This is another support card for commander dragon decks. For you get an enchantment with whenever a creature with flying enters the battlefield under your control, it gains haste until end of turn. Whenever a Dragon enters the battlefield under your control, it deals X damage to target creature or player, where X is the number of Dragons you control.

I think it is easy to see why this is a good card. Most dragons will have flying and this card will give them haste. Being able to swing immediately with (big) creatures is a big plus and makes the mana investment more worthwhile. Especially in combination with our #1 winner, Dragonborn Champion, you may immediately able to draw a card with that dragon as well.

This card can be found a lot in decks revolving around Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm, which is a really popular commander nowadays, but also in other dragon commanders that can support the color like Lathliss, Dragon Queen.

But it's also important to mention the printing of Ancient Gold Dragon in Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate that makes a 2-card combo to potentially finish the game. When Ancient Gold Dragon deals combat damage it will create (hopefully) a bunch of dragon tokens that will all trigger Dragon Tempest's second ability. If you roll a five with Ancient Gold Dragon, for example, this will create five tokens at the same time. This will trigger Dragon Tempest five times dealing six damage per trigger for 30 Damage total.

 

#3 Desecration Elemental $2.96 (+83%)

 

This is a pretty interesting creature. For 4 mana you get an 8/8 with Fear! Now that is a good bargain! However, there is a catch. Whenever a player casts a spell, you have to sacrifice a creature. So why would you play this creature? Especially in multiplayer the chances are multiple spells have been cast before you'll be able to attack with it and you most likely had to sacrifice it already.

Enter Jon Irenicus, Shattered One. This new commander was printed in Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate and gives you the opportunity to gift creatures to your opponents. When you do, the creature becomes goaded, meaning it attacks each combat if able and attacks a player other than you if able. Since the gifted creature also gets "this creature cannot be sacrificed" by Jon, your opponent will have to sacrifice a different creature each time a spell is cast.

We also see movement in the price of Taniwha which could be attributed to Desecration Elemental as well. But also cards like Ebonblade Reaper and Hellcarver Demon could find a home in decks revolving around Jon. However, these last two already experienced extra popularity and spikes due to the printing of The Beamtown Bullies.

While Desecration Elemental is not a particular strong card, it is a rare with only a single printing in Fifth Dawn. Since the price was hovering around $0.50 it is an easy speculation target in the hopes it would go up. The foil version however shot up to $30 from $1.40, but keep in mind the market price of the foil version still is only $8.

Weekly Loser: Double Masters 2022 Edition

Dockside Extortionist $59.99 (-16%)

 

Since Double Masters 2022 is being spoiled and we have seen some notable reprints, maybe it is fun to look at these reprints and how the prices are affected. So this week I noticed that Dockside Extortionist has dropped by 16% to $59.99 since its reprint is announced. Now keep in mind that pre-ordering the card now from Double Masters 2022 will set you back $50, meaning even cheaper than the original print. I do expect the price to come down more, so keep an eye in this one if you are in the market for it.

Plague Wind has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Underpriced Cards feature as a card that has a strong uptrend and where for the 8th Edition print the market price seems to be going up faster than the average listing price.
