Weekly Winners 2022 - 19

Treasure tokens are hot and both Streets Of New Capenna and Commander: Streets of New Capenna contain a bunch of cards that have something to do with these tokens. We see these cards gaining traction in commander play and a lot of last week's winners are related to this. As you can infer from the previous sentences, that means that this week, commander is the driving factor behind the spikes. Where the past few weeks we saw a bunch of Pioneer we now have to make way again for casual play!

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

#1 Jolene, the Plunder Queen $9.90 (+348%)

Jolene, the Plunder Queen

Wizards noticed something in the past few sets: people seem to like Treasure tokens. So what did they do in the New Capenna set and commander set? Putting Treasure token interactions on most cards! Cards either create Treasure tokens or cards can do something with these tokens, but either way, it has gotten some extra amazing support and this week we see the full effect of this.

Jolene, the Plunder Queen has three abilities:

  1. Whenever a player attacks one or more of your opponents, that attacking player creates a Treasure token. This incentives players to attack other people but you. Obviously the downside is that you are ramping your opponents.
  2. If you would create one or more Treasure tokens, instead create those tokens plus an additional Treasure token. More Treasure tokens is good in a deck that is built around it. More ramp, color fixing, or any other artifact shenanigans.
  3. Sacrifice five Treasures: Put five +1/+1 counters on Jolene. Being able to create a bunch of Treasures and then being able to buff Jolene on instant speed is pretty good. That way you can also make sure your Treasures are good in the late game.

All-in-all Jolene is a solid commander by herself and with the right support she can do crazy stuff. On April 27th we saw Jolene, the Plunder Queen being played by Ned Fulmer in Game Knights on The Command Zone, putting a lot of extra eyes on the card. But you would think the spike happened back then, but it is now steadily going up.

#2 Rain of Riches $17.09 (+282%)

Rain of Riches

And another cards from Spire Serpent shooting up, and just like our #1 winner it has a Treasure tokens theme. When Rain of Riches hits the battlefield you get to create two Treasure tokens and each time you play your first spell of the turn, where a Treasure was used to pay for that spell, you get to cascade that spell. That is a lot of value.

As you can imagine it is often included in Jolene, the Plunder Queen commander decks, but it is also played in Vazi, Keen Negotiator, Korvold, Fae-Cursed King, 'Henzie \, and Ziatora, the Incinerator decks.

#3 Unfulfilled Desires $17.05 (+104%)

Unfulfilled Desires

I decided to skip a few cards on the Interests list of this week because most tend to fall in the same theme as our #1 and #2 winner. So our #3 winner this week is Unfulfilled Desires, a rare from Mirage that is on the reserved list. Especially this last bit of information will let you know that because there is a limited supply of the card the price is more easily manipulated and more volatile than other cards.

The card sees some fringe play in commander decks around Lazav, the Multifarious and Zur the Enchanter for example. But more recently it may be becoming more popular because of a new commander from New Capenna: Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer. Being able to have discard outlets is important for Oskar, because it can essentially become a "draw a card". However, I think there are better outlets like Tortured Existence or Compulsion. But since you probably need multiple of these discard outlets to make sure you always hit one it seems like an easy enough include.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Mirri, Cat Warrior $4.95 - Moving up!
