Weekly Winners 2022 - 14

A somewhat concise Weekly Winners this week because of my holiday. Spoiler season has now officially started for Streets Of New Capenna and we expect to see some prices fluctuate because of that. This week it still seems pretty quiet on that front, but this is likely to change. We will see spikes because of Commander and Pioneer.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

#1 Timely Ward $4.45 (+127%)

Timely Ward

Seeing the text on the card it will not come as a surprise that the reason for the spike is commander driven. We see the card show up a bunch in new decks around Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice and Norika Yamazaki, the Poet. But you can imagine it works well in a lot of decks that can use white. Giving a creature indestructible is pretty valuable, but especially if you can do it at instant speed, it can really be a blow out.

The card itself can be found in the Commander Legends: Arm for Battle deck.

#2 Hengegate Pathway $15.70 (+86%)

Hengegate Pathway

It is not that often that we see a land, and especially that is not a fetchland or shockland, enter the Interests. But this week we see Hengegate Pathway moving up quickly. It belongs in Standard manabases from Azorius Control and Jeskai decks, but Pioneer is becoming popular quickly! We see this card there in popular decks like Bant, Azorius Spirits, Azoruis Control and Greasefang, Okiba Boss decks.

It obviously also sees play in Commander in a deck that can support both colors.

#3 Arclight Phoenix $15.00 (+67%)

Arclight Phoenix

Again another card going up because of Pioneer. The Izzet Phoenix deck is doing well in the format at the moment. Pioneer is not the first format where this card is showing up. We have seen it show up in Modern in the past, where it doesn't seem to be positioned well at the moment, but it does occasionally show up in Legacy.

This Phoenix is a creature that you will not see being hardcasted often. The idea of the deck is to get it into your graveyard with cards like Faithless Looting (Historic), Consider (Pioneer), or Buried Alive (Legacy). Then the chaining of spells begins! You will try to cast three instant or sorcery spells and get that flying 3/2 out of the graveyard for some hasty attacks.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Premodern is increasingly making prices move. But since today is Lorwyn Eclipsed release, we'll also see spikes because of that.

Not unsurpsingly Lorwyn Eclipsed is making the market move. And just like last week it mainly seems to come from the precons which seems to be very popular.
