Weekly Winners 2019 - 25

M20 spoilers have started and are affecting the markets, but the effects of Modern Horizons are also noticeable. So, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

#1 Primal Beyond $8.99 (+251.17%)

Primal Beyond

Just when the spoiler season for Modern Horizons ended, we rolled into the next. Core Set 2020 spoilers are upon us. Our #1 winner this week is the direct result of one of the first cards spoiled. Not only Creeping Trailblazer but also the new Chandra Planeswalkers mention Elementals as a creature type. And when interesting new toys come on the market, people start looking for ways to get those Elementals into play as smoothly as possible.

Primal Beyond is a non-legendary land that can improve your Elemental strategy. And (if you were quick enough) for just a few bucks for a playset. The card was instantly tipped on multiple message boards for players and speculators alike.

Important to note is that Creeping Trailblazer might tipped people off that Elementals are going to be a thing in M20, the card itself is not drawing a lot of attention. With a price of $0.42 (and going down) the card itself does not seem to turn many heads yet. The fact that it was spoiled after the Chandra planeswalkers, and having a bonus effect for "other elementals you control", means that there will be other Elementals in the set as well. Maybe some that will be really good. That alone is incentive enough for Primal Beyond to spike in price.

Its price could spike even higher when some really good Elementals are spoiled. And it could crash right back when Elementals turn out to be a weak or even minor theme in M20.

Primal Beyond CardKingdom $7.99 TCGPlayer $8.99
Creeping Trailblazer CardKingdom $0.25 TCGPlayer $0.42

#2 Warren Instigator $19.48 (+160.08%)

Warren Instigator

Sometimes surprising things happen. You might expect that after Modern Horizons Wizards would be done with printing Modern relevant cards for just a while. And all of a sudden Goblin Ringleader was announced. And that is a big thing for everyone that would love to play a powerful Modern Goblin deck.

Combine Goblin Ringleader with Warren Instigator and you've got quite a powerful engine. With Goblin Ringleader you get card advantage and with Warren Instigator you sneak those goblins into play. And it is even better when you put a Goblin Ringleader into play with the first strike, and what you find with it with the double strike!

In Legacy Goblin decks, Goblin Matron and Goblin Lackey are put into the mix as well. That card remains exclusive to the Eternal formats, but who knows what else is printed in M20. And since Goblin Matron is becoming Modern Legal too, Goblin fanatics will have a field day with Goblin Ringleader.

Goblin Ringleader's placement as an uncommon is also quite generous for M20 limited and people who want to get their powerful goblins for a lower price. The Apocalypse version is not that expensive either, but that could have been different when the newer printing would be at rare. And considering its power, that would not be a crazy move. At uncommon, Goblin Ringleader will probably stay quite affordable, also for the more casual player. But think twice when you ditch out $60 for Warren Instigator, your casual buddies might not like it when you bring a Legacy-powerhouse to the kitchen table!

Warren Instigator CardKingdom $12.99 TCGPlayer $19.48
Goblin Lackey CardKingdom $12.99 TCGPlayer $11.99
Goblin Matron CardKingdom $1.49 TCGPlayer $1.09
Goblin Ringleader CardKingdom $0.49 TCGPlayer $0.48

#3 Necroskitter $11.47 (+156.60%)

Necroskitter

In multiplayer, what do you like better? Killing your opponent's creatures or stealing them? Well, sometimes you don't have to choose. When Yawgmoth, Thran Physician is your Commander, and you get Necroskitter into play, you can kill your opponent's dudes and put them into play under your control.

Necroskitter was already seeing play and because it is from an older set, increases in demand quickly lead to price spikes. So don't be too hasty in concluding that because Necroskitter is now a $10+ card, the combo with Yawgmoth, Thran Physician is proven or powerful. It feels pretty good, but this combo has to prove itself in competitive environments.

If you are a into details, you might have noticed that Necroskitter is an Elemental. I have no reason to suspect that its spike should be correlated with the announcement of Creeping Trailblazer, and with that the announcement of Elementals as a creature type in M20. Necroskitter was already on the rise but its spike did happen on the day of the Elemental spoiler. Maybe people that were thinking about buying the card got convinced when they saw Elementals in M20. Maybe it's just a coincidence.

Necroskitter CardKingdom $10.99 TCGPlayer $11.47
Necroskitter CardKingdom $8.99 TCGPlayer $10.13
Yawgmoth, Thran Physician CardKingdom $17.99 TCGPlayer $16.00
Creeping Trailblazer CardKingdom $0.25 TCGPlayer $0.42

Cheap Pickups - War of the Spark Edition

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

About 50 days ago War of the Spark was released. As you probably know, prerelease prices are notoriously high. What we know is that people tend to form a picture of the price of a card during prerelease and at the release of a set. So this week, I'll give you the biggest examples of cards from War of the Spark that are a lot less expensive than you might think.
