Weekly Winners 2022 - 09

This week we keep seeing cards move because of cards printed in either Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty or Commander: Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. We see prices moving, not only because of commander, but also because of Modern and Legacy. These weeks with a mix like that generally are my favorite ones!

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

Just want to remind you all that we currently have a giveaway going on where you can win a boosterbox of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty and get one year of MTGStocks Premium. Go over to this article to see how you can win! You only have until Monday to participate!

#1 Hidetsugu Consumes All $12.21 (+303%)

Hidetsugu Consumes All

Where to start with this card?! There is so much going on. Not only do we see people brew with it in multiple formats, but there also has been quite some attention on this card from various content creators. Hidetsugu Consumes All does a lot of things: clears the board of cheap nonland permanents, exiles graveyards, and then turns into a 3/3 trample that can be a wincon in itself because of its abilities.

Let us first get into the formats it gets played in. In Pioneer we see Hidetsugu Consumes All show up in mainly sideboard in Rakdos Midrange and 5c Niz-Mizzet decks. Not too much going on there, but because of its versatility it can be used against various decks. I think we Modern we see the same thing happening where it finds it way into various sideboards. Remember it is a good card against Urza's Saga.dec.

But we see it being played as a 4-off in Legacy Grixis decks. When this card was released I already saw the "Make Grixis Great Again" posts on Legacy subreddits. Remember what I said about Modern and Urza's Saga? The same is true for Legacy, where a card that can deal with all these cheap permanents is amazing. It also deals with Enchantress decks and gets rid of most creatures in popular archetypes like Izzet Delver.

A few days ago SaffronOlive played a Mardu deck in Standard with Hidetsugu Consumes All on his stream, which could have an effect on the price. But it was also mentioned in the Command Zone podcast and as we all know this in itself can be a reason for a card to spike.

Hidetsugu Consumes All also sees some play in commander like in Go-Shintai of Life's Origin, Hidetsugu, Devouring Chaos, and Isshin, Two Heavens as One.

#2 Richard Garfield, Ph.D. $5.97 (+275%)

Richard Garfield, Ph.D.

To be fair I wasn't really sure whether I would actually wanted to discuss this spike. But because it is such an uncommon occurrence for a card from Unsanctioned to spike this much and even a card with an iconic Magic personality on it, I felt like we could briefly address this spike. Does this card all of the sudden see a bunch of play in a Standard? No, it's not from a recent standard set and thus not legal. Does it see play in a new archetype in an eternal format? No, because it's a silver-bordered card and not tournament legal. Does it see play in commander? No, see the previous reason... Then what's the deal?

Buyout! There aren't that many copies on the market to begin with and since it has the image of Richard Garfield on it, I think it's a card collectors love to have in their possession. With the Unfinity set coming up maybe people feel it is time to fill out their collections of the previous unsets. But most likely it does seem like someone sucked up the remaining supply and thus driving the price up.

#3 Sigil of the Empty Throne $4.49 (+125%)

Sigil of the Empty Throne

This card is somewhat interesting in my opinion. We mainly see the spike on the Time Spiral: Remastered version of this card, and while this card has been reprinted numerous times and can be had for about $1 to $1.50, it does see a steady slow uptrend across the board.

The reason for this spike should not be a surprise. In Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty there has been several new enchantments and with Hallowed Haunting getting quite some love lately it seems that Sigil of the Empty Throne is an easy include in these decks. Now this version from Time Spiral: Remastered is the only special-treatment version of this card, so if you want to bling it, this is your only real option. So I presume that's the most apparent reason for this version to go up.

But let us look a bit at the charts from the other version of the past 6 months.

Do you see a pattern here? Almost all of them are steadily going up. I am definitely not saying that this card will be a $5 card some day, because Wizards has shown its not afraid of reprinting this card, but it is an interesting trend to notice.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Glorious Sunrise $1.48 - Slowly trending up!

This card was found in the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature. Card started preselling for almost $10 and dropped quickly after that. It has been having a steady uptrend for some time now and the market price has surpassed the average price. Good time to pick this up!
