Weekly Winners 2022 - 07

Another week where we see cards jump around because of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. It was not easy picking the right cards to discuss, because there are also quite some reserved list cards moving around. But there doesn't seem a lot more going on than niche-synergy with these cards and look more like targeted buyouts. So this week I think I managed to find the most fun and interesting cards to discuss and skipping over the older ones.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

Magic Money

A new articles series has started called "Magic Money", written by Collin, who will focus on how to properly buy, sell and invest in Magic sealed products. You can find the first iteration here. Give it a read and let us know what you think or what topics you would like to see discussed.

#1 Whip Silk $3.00 (+117%)

Whip Silk

A common from Invasion that comes from a time when "Reach" did not exist yet as a keyword. It went up with over 100% and will now cost you about $3 each. This number may not be backbreaking for some of you, but it is interesting to see this price go up this much. Whip Silk has never been reprinted, but may very well be in the future if it continues to be popular.

Most people may have guessed that this card has gone up because of Commander appeal. The card is not necessarily new in the commander-scene since it already found its home in decks around Anthousa, Setessan Hero and Sythis, Harvest's Hand, but in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty there is a strong focus again around Enchantments. This means that more players are drawn to the archetype and may be (re)building their Sythis, Harvest's Hand decks. But Kamigawa also brought a commander that works well with this card and that is Tatsunari, Toad Rider.

The synergy in enchantment decks is not hard to follow. Being able to return it to your hand and replay it enables you to let enter the battlefield triggers happen over and over again. It strongly resembles another card that spiked not too long ago and was discussed in Weekly Winners 2022 - 02: Flickering Ward. Another enchantment that can be return to your hand and replayed. Coincidentally this card also fits well into Sythis, Harvest's Hand decks and also works well with new commander Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice.

#2 Hero of Bladehold $13.17 (+39%)

Hero of Bladehold

Another card going up because of commander. Hero of Bladehold goes up with 39%, and this card also is definitely not new in the commander scene. When you read this card you already see why it would be strong to have on the battlefield in agro based strategies. Creating new attacking tokens along with making your other attacking creatures stronger is pretty good.

This Human Knight already sees play in most Adriana, Captain of the Guard decks, but is also commonly found in Adeline, Resplendent Cathar and Odric, Master Tactician decks. But in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, of course, we see a new commander where Hero of Bladehold can slot right in. This is a new commander that was also already mentioned in our previous Weekly Winners and is Isshin, Two Heavens as One. Last week we talked about how Isshin was the reason for Fervent Charge spiking, a card we also see high in the Interests this week. One major reason for the spike could be attributed to The Command Zone discussing this card, but Hero of Bladehold was mentioned briefly after as well.

But now another video was released by The Professor over at Tolarian Community College talking about Isshin and possible cards that fit right into the deck. And of course also mentioning Hero of Bladehold. These two YouTube channels are pretty well known across the Magic world and have a lot of viewers. This would definitely have an impact on the price.

#3 Tower of the Magistrate $12.21 (+36%)

Tower of the Magistrate

Tower of the Magistrate is one of those cards that easily slot into commander decks that don't really care about coloured mana. Why not just include it if you can support it, may come in handy in some situations. Because of this it does see some commander play, mainly in artifact-based decks, but usually does not fulfil a very specific function.

However, we do see this land show up occasionally in Legacy decks. We have seen it show up in Lands, Death and Taxes and Maverick. It seems like it finds it way as 1-off in decks to give some extra protection against 8-Cast decks and Urza's Saga decks. Also keep in mind that Tower of the Magistrate can be used to give an equipped creature "protection from artifacts", meaning the equipment will drop off of it.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
