Weekly Winners - 2018-36

After months and months of huge spikes, reserved list buyouts and other hypes, we've had the first slow week since. But as always when the spotlight shifts; evergreen cards suddenly pop up in interesting ways!

#1 Darksteel Forge $19.70 (+51.07%)

Darksteel Forge

Darksteel Forge is not much to look at on first glance. For a whopping you can make all your artifacts indestructible. Which is nice in artifact-themed decks, but when you can cough up there are tons of other, better cards you can play. And also: Darksteel Forge was first printed in Darksteel; a set in which many artifacts were already indestructible, making it even more underwhelming at the time.

But currently, you will have to pay $19.70 to get your hands on a copy of Darksteel Forge. The cards sees play in EDH: it is featured in 10.580 decks on EDHREC.com. It is played in decks with Breya, Etherium Shaper, Chromium, the Mutable, Karn, Silver Golem and more recently Saheeli, the Gifted. The recent popularity of that last commander pushes Darksteel Forge to a spike.

Do note that both its original printing and its M14 printing are still around $13. But both of them are also up in price recently.

#2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor $89.95 (+5.17%)

Jace, the Mind Sculptor

After Jace, the Mind Sculptor was unbanned in Modern, the card spiked to a new high of $140. In the month since it has slowly dwindled to a price far under $100, settling around the $85 mark. Interestingly, its reprint in Masters 25 did nothing to change the pace in which the card lost value. It did not affect the trend at all. Maybe because the card was spoiled early, and in much higher demand because of its unbanning.

This week Jace, the Mind Sculptor netted a weekly result of more than 5% gain. With that, Jace, the Mind Sculptor seems to be out of its all time low and growing in price again. The planeswalker is so iconic that even a reprint cannot stop its growth for a long time.

#3 Karakas $97.81 (+8.69%)

Karakas

Another iconic staple is up this week: Karakas. After its reprint in Eternal Masters it lost value and reached a low it hasn't seen for quite some time: $60. Coming from an all time high of $166, that is quite some loss. Karakas started going up in the beginning of this summer and is now ready to break the $100 mark again.

The popularity of Death & Taxes, Lands and Eldrazi in Legacy has driven up the card in price. But outside those three archetypes, the card sees play in not less than 15 different legacy decks. Sure, some of those decks are non-tier decks; but it proves the flexibility and power of the card.

Loser of the Week

Steam Vents $11.36 MARKET PRICE (-31%)

Steam Vents

You might have missed it, since our interests are calculated based on the TCG Mid prices, but Steam Vents is seriously down nontheless. Its MID price is still in the $17 range, but its market price plummeted this week with more than 30%! If you are not familiar with the term: the market price is the price people are actually paying to acquire a card. Most of the time, the market price follows the TCG Mid price, but not always. In this case, the market price has plummeted. This will most likely cause webstores to lower their prices as well, since they won't sell their Steam Vents at the current price.

The reason for this drop in price is the announcement that Steam Vents is being reprinted in the new Ravnica set called Guilds of Ravnica.

Just like last week, the Commander: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt spoilers are the main factor of influence on the markets this week. There are enough cards spoiled for the brewing to commence and we expect a lot more movement in the coming weeks!

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.
