Weekly Winners 2021 - 51

The upcoming Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty is stirring up the prices as we are closing in to the end of the year. This may be the last Weekly Winners of 2021, because next week is the 31st, meaning we will do our "Year Review", which are Interests of the past year and some additional filtering on those.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

#1 Gravestorm $22.97 (+726%)

Gravestorm

Our first winner of this week is Gravestorm. A rare from Odyssey, and with this spike it currently sits at the 6th place of most expensive card from this set. It has never received a reprint, and since it originated in 2001, it is 20 years since it came out. Last week we saw March of Souls moving up that has the same similar conditions: somewhat playable, old, never been reprinted.

It seems like Ground Seal was discovered by the Commander crowd. It plays really well with cards like Ashiok, Dream Render, Leyline of the Void and Planar Void that makes sure your opponents do not have a graveyard anymore and thus Gravestorm will likely draw you a card during your upkeep. Hmmm... Ashiok... Leyline of the Void... and Planar Void you say? Pretty sure we can think of a commander where these three cards would slot in nicely... Right! Umbris, Fear Manifest works perfectly with these cards and Gravestorm will work nicely with all these cards that get rid of those graveyards.

But even though the average price has jumped up, the market price is still dwindling behind at $3.97, but at the moment this card can not easily be found for that price.

Gravestorm
Planar Void
Ashiok, Dream Render
Leyline of the Void
Umbris, Fear Manifest

#2 Higure, the Still Wind $17.00 (+42%)

Higure, the Still Wind

Get your Ronin Warclub's ready for the Ninjutsu brigade! Last week we discussed the Samurai moving up, and also this week we see several Samurai cards pop up in the interests, but the ones we discussed do seem to be a bit lower than they were last week. But it will be no surprise that we may also see some Ninja support in the upcoming set Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. And the spike of Higure, the Still Wind seems to be because of that.

Last week Kaito Shizuki was spoiled to us, and it mentions the Ninja creature type. Even though this still is not a guarantee that more Ninja creatures will actually show up in the set, it is a pretty strong indicator along with that Ninjas are kind of expected in the set. You now see that people or jumping on the Ninja-wagon and getting the most important staples within this tribal.

We also see Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow spiking this week, since she's the most popular commander for the Ninja tribal when you want to build a deck around them. Further more we see Sakashima's Student going up.

Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow $8.86 (+41%)

Sakashima's Student $64.58 (+17%)

#3 Maddening Hex $3.01 (+309%)

Maddening Hex

I am kind of surprised to see this card show up now. In Weekly Winners 41 we discussed other curses like Curse of Disturbance and Cruel Reality and in Weekly Winners 37 we saw Curse of Vengeance show up. As you may have noticed, Maddening Hex is also a Curse and apparently, just like the other curses, those have gotten some extra love recently with the printing of Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor and the new curses.

However, I could not find a compelling reason why this card would spike now. Was it recently discovered to be good? I doubt it, because according to EDHRec it is already played in almost 85% of the Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor decks. Maybe people realised this card was pretty cheap for being an auto-include in these decks.

Curse of Disturbance
Maddening Hex
Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor
Cruel Reality

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Premodern is increasingly making prices move. But since today is Lorwyn Eclipsed release, we'll also see spikes because of that.

Not unsurpsingly Lorwyn Eclipsed is making the market move. And just like last week it mainly seems to come from the precons which seems to be very popular.
