Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Treebeard, Gracious Host $6.84 (+197%)

Toughness matters strategies got some new toys with Lorwyn Eclipsed, and older cards are feeling the effects. Treebeard, Gracious Host from Commander: The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth has been going up as players build around the new typal commanders from the set. This legendary Treefolk enters with two Food tokens and turns lifegain into +1/+1 counters for your Halflings and Treefolk. With a 0/5 body that has trample and ward, Treebeard can easily become a massive threat while protecting itself somewhat.

The spike is tied directly to Doran, Besieged by Time. Doran's toughness-matters game plan makes Treebeard's high base toughness immediately relevant as a threat, while the counter-granting ability lets you spread stats across your board. Food tokens naturally synergize with lifegain triggers, meaning every Food you crack gives you three counters to distribute.

This isn't Treebeard's first spike. The card spiked twice before, once with Wilds of Eldraine and again with Bloomburrow, though both times it eventually settled back down. Whether this spike holds depends on how much staying power these new toughness-focused strategies have, but with Treebeard being played in over thirty-five thousand decks, demand seems more sustainable this time around. That said, Felothar the Steadfast is a popular commander within this archetype, and that card has been mentioned in five separate Weekly Winners articles in three months. It does seem like a strategy people tend to like!

#2 Tyvar the Bellicose $19.80 (+80%)

We probably could have talked about Tyvar last week, but he barely made the cut. Though I still feel it deserves a place here. Because Elf decks continue to be ever-popular, and Tyvar the Bellicose from March of the Machine: The Aftermath is the latest Elf to spike. This legendary Elf Warrior gives your attacking Elves deathtouch, which makes blocking your token armies significantly more painful for opponents. But the real value comes from his second ability where every creature you control gets bigger whenever it taps for mana, turning your army of small mana dorks into real threats.

The synergy with Elf typal strategies is obvious. Cards like Elvish Archdruid, Priest of Titania, and Marwyn, the Nurturer already produce tons of mana quickly, and with Tyvar on the battlefield they become massive beaters in the process. High Perfect Morcant has been the primary driver here. Being able to grant deathtouch and make your dorks huge with +1/+1 counters, which you can then proliferate with the High Perfect works well!

Being from March of the Machine: The Aftermath hasn't helped the supply. That set wasn't exactly a hit, which means fewer boxes were opened and mythics like Tyvar are scarcer than typical. The card has jumped from around three dollars to almost twenty in just the past month. Extended art and showcase versions are trending even higher.

#3 Jason Bright, Glowing Prophet $0.99 (+175%)

Before you judge me for talking about a one-dollar card, we're mainly discussing this card because of it's extended art version and the trend we also see in the surge foil variant. Because Mutant typal decks are picking up steam with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles release, and Jason Bright, Glowing Prophet from Universes Beyond: Fallout is catching some of that momentum. This legendary Zombie Mutant Advisor draws you cards whenever a Zombie or Mutant dies if it's base power was different from its current power. And with all the anthems and lords that typal decks generlaly run, that trigger will happen frequently. His activated ability even helps set this up by putting counters on creatures and giving them flying, which doubles as both a combat trick and a sacrifice outlet.

The card has mostly lived in its home precon, Mutant Menace, and in The Wise Mothman decks since release. But with Heroes in a Half Shell previewed from the TMNT set, players are taking an extra look at Mutant cards. Heroes in a Half Shell consistently buffs your board while providing its own card draw, which makes Jason Bright a good fit. The synergy extends to Zombie typal as well as, for example, Geralf, the Fleshwright both creates and pumps Zombies, making Jason Bright trigger reliably.

Supply has been tightening as players scoop up copies. What was sitting around a quarter in late January has climbed to over a dollar, with extended art versions now going towards four dollars. As it looks now, you can absolutely get a regular copy cheap, but the special variants are going up faster. With Mutant support coming in the TMNT set, that trend could continue.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Secret Tunnel $3.18 - Moving up!

Secret Tunnel has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.

Hei Bai, Forest Guardian $10.07 - Moving down

Vraska, Betrayal's Sting $1.10 - Moving up
