Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Lutri, the Spellchaser $6.25 (+1289%)

This spike may not surprise anyone, but let's just address the Otter in the room. Lutri, the Spellchaser, originally printed in Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths has shot up following the recent Commander ban announcement. The card was pre-banned before it even hit tables back in 2020 due to its companion ability being essentially free in Commander; every Izzet deck could just slot it in without any real deckbuilding cost.

Now with the new "Banned as Companion" category, Lutri can finally see play, and players have been scooping up copies.

The card itself is pretty straightforward when you look past the companion text. Flash in this legendary Otter and copy an instant or sorcery you control. It's the same thing Dualcaster Mage has been doing for years. What makes Lutri appealing is that it can finally be used in decks that want spell copying effects, especially spellslinger builds running commanders like Niv-Mizzet, Parun or Melek, Izzet Paragon. There's also the infinite combo potential with Release to the Wind that's back on the table.

The market reaction has been insane. Copies that were sitting at $0.25 have jumped as over a thousand copies moved in just the first day after the announcement. Both the original Ikoria printing and the Multiverse Legends version from March of the Machine are trending upward together.

But there was another card that was unbanned this week, and obviously it's also a winner this week.

#2 Hancock, Ghoulish Mayor $1.86 (+1003%)

Zombies have had their time in the spotlight plenty of times, but Mutants are again getting their moment. Hancock, Ghoulish Mayor from Universes Beyond: Fallout has climbed this week as players gear up for the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cards. This legendary advisor pumps all your other Zombies and Mutants based on how many counters are sitting on Hancock himself, and with undying in the text box, he naturally grows when he comes back from the graveyard. What was once primarily viewed as Zombie support is now being recognized for its Mutant potential.

The spike likely comes from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles preview cards showcasing strong Mutant synergies that players are eager to build around. Hancock serves as one of the few actual "lords" for the type. His undying ability means he may come back bigger, which in turn makes your entire Mutant army progressively stronger. If you can put some extra counters on Hancock he may not come back when he dies, but will be pumping the team.

Now let's quickly address the price and percentage mentioned in the header. Because the regular version of the card did go up, but not that much. It's especially the foil print, extended art, and surge foils that have shot up. Players building around the new Mutant commanders are picking up copies now before the full spoiler drops and demand increases even further.

#3 Iona, Shield of Emeria $15.00 (+173%)

We already discussed the cards that were unbanned last Monday, but another card is making waves despite staying banned... for now. Iona, Shield of Emeria has gone up as players speculate about a potential unban in the near future. The card was explicitly discussed in Wizards' announcement as being "very close" and "right on the cusp" of getting the green light, with the team asking for community feedback before making a final decision.

The Angel's ability is straightforward, but can be very brutal. When she enters, you name a color, and your opponents can't cast spells of that color anymore. For multicolor decks this can already be awful, but manageable. For monocolor players though, Iona basically locks them out of the game. And while nine mana is a lot, remember that reanimation strategies exist, and cheating this into play early can effectively eliminate a player from the table. The design team acknowledges this creates miserable experiences, but also points to the political gameplay and disruption elements as potentially interesting for the format.

Iona isn't the only banned card getting attention from this announcement. Griselbrand is also being considered as a potential unban, and that Demon has seen similar market movement. The difference is that Griselbrand represents maybe an even bigger threat. Drawing seven cards for seven life in a format with forty life is incredibly powerful, especially when you can reanimate it early. Wizards called it "high-risk, high-reward," and the community response has been mixed at best. Both cards are seeing increased demand as players position themselves ahead of potential changes, but whether either actually gets unbanned depends on the feedback Wizards receives over the coming weeks.
