Unwrapping the Chocobo Bundle
It’s been a little over a week since Magic debuted the Chocobo Bundle, a holiday specialty product containing promos with new art and new foil treatments from Final Fantasy, plus a handful of reprinted in-universe cards done in the Final Fantasy style.
So, just how successful has the product been, and how much value can buyers look to get? Let’s take a look.
Chocobo Track Foils: Basic Lands
Like any bundle, the Chocobo Bundle brings with it a bevy of basic lands – both foil and non-foil full arts alike. What’s special about this bundle, however, are the Chocobo Track Foil basic lands.
These full art basics are printed with a unique foil treatment limited to just the Chocobo Bundle that, you guessed it, makes them look like a Chocobo walked across the surface (or even a chicken, for that matter). Each bundle comes with ten of these lands – two of each basic land type. Currently, that adds up to…nearly $25?
That’s right – for the first time in a while, Magic has printed some full-art basics that are worth more than a dollar each. On the low side, these lands are going for around $2 on the open market, while the more expensive lands are priced closer to $3.
That might not be a lot of value on an individual card basis, but when summed up over ten guaranteed cards that value really adds up.
Chocobo Track Foils: Rares and Mythics
Beyond the guaranteed lands, the bundle also includes two Chocobo Track foils which are randomly selected from a list of 20 options. While the list is primarily cards found in Final Fantasy and its associated commander products, the list also includes the seemingly random (but very valuable)
On the cheap end, the least valuable Chocobo Track promo from the list is
On the opposite end of the spectrum, those nine high-value options include three cards above $100: Snapcaster Mage and
Altogether, the average value of a Chocobo Track foil rare or mythic is $57 – and this bundle has two of them.
All the Rest
Outside of the Chocobo Track foils, the bundle also includes two more specialty cards: a traditional foil reprint of Birds of Paradise - reskinned as
Starting with the new cards, the most expensive possible find in this slot is Vivi’s Persistence, which is currently valued at $33. Unfortunately, the value of Vivi’s Persistence is a pretty substantial outlier in this slot, with the majority of cards valued closer to $5.
Moving to the Birds of Paradise reprint, this card isn’t terribly pricey but is certainly a worthwhile pickup for any fan of Final Fantasy – or of Chocobos in general. Valued at $8, this borderless traditional foil reskin of Birds of Paradise costs just about as much as a normal copy of the card from any of its many other prints.
Lastly, what would a bundle be without booster packs? This bundle contains ten Play Boosters of Final Fantasy, sealed product which on its own is worth about $60. Nothing new or out of the ordinary, but certainly a strong inclusion for an already value-heavy product.
Wrap Up
Adding everything up, the average Chocobo Bundle should be worth around $215: $25 in lands, $60 in sealed packs, and $130 spread out across the various promo cards. That’s a whole lot of value, especially for something currently selling for around $150 as a sealed box on the open market.
