Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Shelob, Child of Ungoliant $4.14 (+111%)

Only a short nine weeks ago we also talked about Shelob, Child of Ungoliant. Back then we only talked about the Showcase Scrolls variant from The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, but this week we also see the regular print going up. That said, her price is moving with an absolute difference of less than $3. The timing couldn't be more obvious with Spider-Man officially releasing today.

Shelob gives all your Spiders deathtouch and ward while turning enemy creatures into Food tokens when your Spiders kill them, making her the most popular Spider typal commander before the new Marvel set.

But now we also have Cosmic Spider-Man. This creature will probably become the most popular commander for the Spider creature type. While Shelob has always been the go-to choice, she's limited to Golgari colors. While most Spiders have been in the Golgari colors anyway, the new Spider-Man set is introducing more of these eight-legged creatures in the other colors as well, and Cosmic Spider-Man opens up access to them. Having both Shelob and Cosmic Spider-Man in play creates an absolutely absurd board state where every Spider has flying, first strike, trample, lifelink, haste, deathtouch, and ward.

With the renewed interest in the Spider typal, people are trying to get their copies of other notable Spiders in, and Shelob is a prime target for that.

#2 Reaper King $12.05 (+20%)

Did you even know there was a Scarecrow creature type? This Scarecrow Lord has been slowly moving up lately from around $4.50 to $12. There's something interesting with the mana cost of this creature as it costs you between five and ten mana to play it. But when you do put Reaper King into play, you'll buff all your other Scarecrows, but also get to Vindicate every time a Scarecrow enters under your control.

The reason for the price moving up may be people preparing for the upcoming Magic set Lorwyn Eclipsed. The first few cards have leaked online, maybe sparking a little attention to the set. Scarecrows didn't actually appear in the original Lorwyn block, but they did in the Shadowmoor block.

When looking at the lore, Lorwyn and Shadowmoor are the same plane existing in two different states. Every few centuries, the plane undergoes a transformation called the "Great Aurora" that shifts it from Lorwyn's bright, fairy-tale world into Shadowmoor's dark, gothic nightmare (and back again). This cyclical change affects not just the landscape but the creatures themselves. While Scarecrows fit better on the Shadowmoor side, Wizards describes Lorwyn Eclipsed as "Return to the land of light and shadow." Players may be anticipating that the new set explores both sides of the plane and thus a return of Scarecrows. But if that's not the case, we can at least expect new changelings to be printed that can still trigger Reaper King.

#3 Faerie Macabre $4.58 (+44%)

This unassuming Faerie Rogue, originally printed in Shadowmoor, has been doing well lately. While to a lot of players it might look like just another common, players of Legacy and Pauper are well aware it's much more than that. The ability to discard Faerie Macabre from your hand to exile up to two target cards from graveyards gives you instant-speed and uncounterable graveyard interaction.

What's driving the recent interest is the card's versatility in eternal formats where graveyard strategies continue to be prominent and Faerie Macabre provides a clean answer to. The fact that you can hold up mana for other interaction while still having graveyard hate available makes it particularly appealing in competitive environments. As you can imagine, the card appears mostly in sideboards.

The spike isn't surprising when you realize decks that rely on graveyards have been performing well recently. Legacy players especially have been turning to efficient answers. While other graveyard hate requires specific mana or sits vulnerably on the battlefield, this little Faerie does its job from the safety of your hand. And when discarded, it can even fuel your Murktide Regent.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

The Regalia $2.05 - Moving up!

The Regalia has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.
