When looking at the lore, Lorwyn and Shadowmoor are the same plane existing in two different states. Every few centuries, the plane undergoes a transformation called the "Great Aurora" that shifts it from Lorwyn's bright, fairy-tale world into Shadowmoor's dark, gothic nightmare (and back again).
