Weekly Winners (2)
First I want to wish everyone a happy 2014!
I was on Christmas holiday in the past two weeks, that was the reason why there were no weekly winners in week 52 and week 1. And second, I want to thank everyone for their heartwarming concerns about Weekly Winners. The articles are back! And will be back (at least until my next holiday ;-)
New Development
I also have the privilege to share something new with you! We now also compile lists of the most played cards in Standard, Modern, Legacy and Vintage. A good tool to spot highly played and underpriced staples (like Stoneforge Mystic up until it spiked).

#1 Genesis Wave +216,9% ($6)
Genesis Wave has spiked incredibly high (in percentage). Not because it sees competitive play recently. But a few 3-1 and 4-0 finishes in Modern events were enough for people to jump the bandwagon. Many doubt the real potential of Genesis Wave in Modern PTQ's that start coming July, others think it will be the next big thing.
The card does have casual (and EDH) appeal: add a bunch of elves in your beefy green deck and put the top X permanents into play. Instant gamechanger in any casual deck, especially in a multiplayer environment. Who doesn't want a playset of Genesis Waves, it makes any green deck more fun!
The main reason of the spike was careful speculation. And in this case it's not so much the power of a card that drives up the price, but the fear of being left out. It's the simple psychology of scarcity! There had been some rumoring about the card in the past month, and even more during the last week, but primarily among speculators. First in the confines of a closed community, but after a mailblast the tip was out in the open fairly quickly. Some people literally saw "the stock getting lower, every time I hit refresh". TCG was bought out several times in a day.
Is there actual demand for this card at $6? That is the big question! I think this can only be the case when people want to buy it for Modern. Casual and EDH players tend to wait these spikes out before buying into them.
#2 Kami of the Crescent Moon +195.3% ($5)
|
Kami of the Cresent moon is another card that has spiked (in part) because of Nekusar. Check out the previous Weekly Winners to get more insight into EDH Nekusar decks.
The second reason this card is a winner might be because of a new thing in Modern: Owling Mine. On december 16 this deck has finished in third place in a MTGO Modern premier event. So this might be a new thing coming at us. Or, it might be just a rogue deck that got lucky and/or a good pilot!
As linked in the article itself, Owling Mine is not new: Tiago Chan piloted a Owling Mine deck into a Pro Tour in 2006.
#3 Invoke Prejudice +91.3% ($105)
Invoke Prejudice truly is one of the most bizarre magic cards ever printed. It actually features KKK-like ghosts, and punishes all cards that have a different color than creatures you own. Sadly it has no synergy at all with that other xenophobic magic card:
And to make it more bizarre: there are some persistent rumors about the extreme political views of artist of the card.
It's been spiking up since last friday and seriously increasing in price. And mainly because of the collectors value of the card. Some people run it in their EDH deck.
Eternal Mayhem
Many, many Modern and/or Legacy staples are on the rise this week! Check em' out!
